I am so greatly in need of your prayers right now. I have been diagnosed with a hyperactive thyroid. I posted more details here . The treatment involves some sort of radioactive pill, but I am nursing a 1 month old right now. There is a fair amount of pressure for me to wean, if not now, at least an early weaning in order to treat me. The other option doctors are suggesting is for me to pump and discard my milk for the week after I have this treatment to nuke my thyroid. I don't want to do either! My heart is aching at the possibility of weaning.
I really need prayers for wisdom, so I can educate myself. This is a real stress for me, so prayers for peace would also be appreciated. Also, prayers for healing and for a physician supportive of breastfeeding would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all!
UPDATE 5-13:
ANSWERED PRAYERS!! I SAW AN ENDOCRINOLOGIST AT VANDERBILT LAST WEEK AND I'M SO THRILLED WITH THE NEWS! WE ARE STILL UNSURE AS TO THE CAUSE OF MY THYROID ISSUES - I GOT WORSE, AND NOW IT SEEMS MY NUMBERS ARE MOVING TOWARDS NORMAL (STILL A LONG WAY OFF FROM IT THOUGH.) THE DOCTOR SEEMED TO THINK IT WAS QUITE POSSIBLY DUE TO POSTPARTUM ISSUES. WHEW! THERE IS STILL A CHANCE I HAVE AN AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE - EITHER GRAVES OR HASHIMOTOS. I'VE BEEN TESTED, BUT DON'T KNOW THE RESULTS YET. EITHER WAY, HE WAS ABSOLUTELY ADAMANT THAT WE COULD ADDRESS THE THYROID ISSUES WITHOUT ANY RADIATION AND THAT THERE WOULD BE NO NEED TO WEAN KATIE! DEO GRATIAS!
THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR LIFTING ME UP IN PRAYER! I FELT IT!
OFFERING MY ROSARY FOR ALL OF YOUR INTENTIONS. SOMETIMES THANK YOU DOESN'T SEEM TO BE ENOUGH.

Jennifer,
When I had cancer, radioactive swallows and CT scans were a part of the diagnosis process. I was able to pump and discard. I ending up weaning about six weeks later but that was to start chemo. Being able to nurse in the interval between the scans and the actual beginning of chemo was a great comfort to both of us. I worked with a lactation consultant and my pediatrician. Just keep plugging away at this. Don't become discouraged. I'm praying for you.

Dear Jennifer,
This would be my absolute nightmare--I can so relate to you wanting to walk into the bedroom and nurse the baby and just have it all go away!
I am praying to Our Lady for you, especially our Lady of Perpetual Help and Our Lady of La Leche.
Much love to you--I am happy that you are not having any symptoms, yet.

Dear Jennifer
I am so sorry my friend I am just crying for you as I know all about the pressure from doctors to stop nursing.
I am praying all day for you. Just some thoughts:
- I have had hyperthyroid problems too - and just after giving birth was the time they surfaced. My OB took my bloodwork every week for the first 6-12 weeks: the difference from you is that I had awful hyperthyroid symptoms - racing heart, sweats etc. Mine calmed down - though I never had the swollen thyroid
- can you get second (and third?) opinions - eg endocrinologist, ob, naturpathic doctor. You many not have a choice - but maybe somebody else will offer you some other advice - even if just to wait for a little while until your postpartum hormones settle down.
- is there any natural treatment - not sure - can you find some kind of herbal/naturpathic doctor. The only thing I did was to take coconut oil by the tablespoon.
- just to balance it out - you definitely do not want to develop Graves Disease - better to take the medical treatment now
Praying and praying and praying for wisdom and peace for you. Wish I lived closer and I could come and help out.

Thank you all so much for your prayers. I have no more answers, but feel a little more educated thanks mostly to so many of you here and your generosity in sharing your own experiences. Education goes a long way in dis-spelling fear. I'm so grateful to this online community! and humbled by your great generosity in praying for me. Thank you!
