Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We are studying insects and my dc want to collect insects. Looking through the catalogs, I can see this can be quite expensive. I can't fork out money ($9 a piece) for nets for 4 dc (plus the toddlers would cry for one) in addition to special pins, jars, solutions, etc. Does anyone know how to do this cheaply? (especially a homemade net so I could make many)

Some cheap tulle (isn't that what it's called?) from a fabric shop is great. Stitch it on onto a wire hanger, and there it is. This is especially nice with colored tulle.

Also, you can make pit traps with old cans to catch insects. Dig a hole and line it with the can, cover it lightly, and come back in a few days. It's sort of like a tiny tiger trap.

I usually see some cute butterfly nets turning up at dollar stores this time of year, too.
A jar full of rubbing alcohol works well as a killing solution (not for butterflies or moths) and is cheap.
Sewing or map pins work just as well as the more expensive insect ones. I like to use the longer sewing pins and those I found at the drug store for a couple of dollars a box full.

We were advised by local museum to freeze our critters before pinning. This was easy and cheap and supposedly humane to the critters as well. No need for rubbing alcohol or anything as long as you can put up with disgusting bugs in your freezer.
