O.K. I am beginning to think that I am a prude or something.
Last night we went to a teen life mass and I was not impressed. I listen to Contemporary Chritian Music but I do not care for it in mass and that is the music that they had. In addition to the music everytime they said Amen they raised their right hand, it reminded me of pentecostal. I found that althought the kids(we were visiting this church with the middle schoolers from our church following retreat)enjoyed the music they were distracted and certainly not paying attention to the Mass.
It would not be so bad if it was that visit and that was the end of it bnut I was infromed by our DRE that our church will be starting a teen life mass in the fall.My dh and I are not impressed with this idea. Why are we changing the service to suit the people? Aren't we supposed to be the ones who change? If I am missing something please let me know. We are looking into changing churches as this is the "straw that breaks the camels back" in the changes happening in out church.
Opinions or different points of view are welcome.

I don't know the origins of Life Teen but I just do not like it. Luckily, our church does a wonderful job of bringing in the teens for regular mass.
ETA: Do you have any links?

Yes, the "origins" for Life Teen start at my parish.
I happen to love my parish, although I have not always agreed with LT. However, the way it is run elsewhere doesn't always sound ANYTHING like what we have. I have been to EXTREMELY reverent LT Masses.

When my parish went with the LT program, they ADDED a Mass. That way, parishioners had a choice; no one had to adjust to "their" Mass suddenly going LT. It's worked pretty well. I've not been to a LT Mass in our parish, but I know our youth minister (who supports LT) is very, very, very devout and believes strongly in Adoration, Confession and many traditional devotions. Our youth ministry program isn't just LT and nothing else.
I may dodge this bullet completely; ds doesn't like the LT music (it's well done, just not "him") and dd has been eyeing the youth choir at a neighboring parish...she's in our children's choir right now. We'll see.

Speaking as a convert from Protestantism, I was most comfortable in the beginning with the Life Teen Mass. My husband, a Cradle Catholic, wasn't satisfied with it; he preferred the choir Mass. But the only difference between the two was the music. Both were over an hour in length, had a huge procession, incense, bells, reverence, everything.

My "home" parish (where I grew up) began a Life Teen Mass when the priest who married us started there. He is an extremely holy, devout young priest and fairly traditional and is now the vocations director for his diocese. I never went to any of the Masses but I know that priest wouldn't have done anything too crazy. They also added a Mass to their schedule rather than replacing one.
But I'm not a fan of contemporary music at Mass, either. I have seen it done reverently but only once, I think, and that was a wedding.

Our church will be adding a mass to start this for the teens. I guess my concern is though, are we not condoning this change in our church by staying there even if we do not agree with it? There are
other "changes" that have happened that we do not like either but we have looked past them. I guess it is the culmination of everything.

I am very much against the LT masses. Our parish has one at 5:00 on Sundays. My oldest son has gone a few times but I really don't like it. He's pretty conservative and isn't a fan either. It's a shame that they think they have to draw teens in that way.

looking into the founders of Life Teen and some of the sadneess/sin that may have occured there reminds me of a Lay Apostolate organization that the founding priest was accused of abuse, etc. from some of his seminarians/Priests.
How can God allow good to come from something with perhaps a not so pure/clear past or intent??
But, we know many who have had huge and lasting conversions through both of these ministries.
Our Diocese allows ONLY a modified Life Teen Mass to occur, and only one per Vicariate area, so I think as to better keep an eye on things. No kids on the altar, no changing the words of the Mass, etc. Dh and I thought we were going in as little spies to the parish nearby who offers it- and to be honest, it was waaaayyy more mellow than the noon daily Mass at Steubenville's chapel!
So, for good or for bad- I think even the term "Life Teen" can mean different things/invoke different responses depending....
Have we ever been back? no.
but it is interesting to note that while our Catholic Homeschooling group could not keep a youth group/Jeff Cavins teen bible study together, this parish has a very active and vibrant Jeff Cavins study for teens and their youth group is not "fluff" at all....

This is a little off topic, but if anyone's parish is looking to start a youth group, Youth for Life is a sound option.

It seems like many places feel like they need to "entertain" people nowadays. But what I have found, is many people are seeking the quiteness, interior reflection and beauty of the Mass. We have found that in the Traditional Latin Mass. Darlene, you can pm me for info on the one in our area or another option that I know of.
