Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Anyone near Arden (or Asheville / Hendersonville / Fletcher) NC that can give me some ideas of things to do with my 5 & 7 year olds? We have decided to make the trip as a family to see my seriously ill MIL.

We'll only be there a couple days, but I'd like to fit in something other than visiting with DH's very odd family. We love nature and outdoor things. Aren't there some battlefields in that area we could visit? Also, anybody know if there are many geocaches to find in that area? (I'll check geocaching.com soon, but was just curious if there are plenty to be found in that area or not.)

We've visited Biltmore Estate 10+ years ago, and I don't think my boys would be all that interested. Also, the less expensive the better.

ETA: Oh, and a church? Any recommendations? We will be there on a Sunday.

thanks!

Melanie

The basilica in downtown Asheville is lovely. It has an awesome oval domed ceiling.
There is also a nice nature center in Asheville, and the NC Arboretum has an awesome Bonsai collection.
The Cradle of Forestry site in Pisgah National Forest has a nice museum dedicated to the history of forestry and often has guided walks, etc.
My kids really like to visit the fish hatchery in Pisgah forest. They have a great visitors center, nature walk, and you can feed the fish (lots of trout)in the runs. Also good trailheads from there.
Of course there are numerous trails trough the forests.
Mount Mitchell, highest mountain east of the Mississippi is just north of Asheville and it is pretty cool. Has a nice museum display as well. That would be a bit of a drive, though.
Along the parkway is the Folk Art Center, which is not so great for kids, but has some awesome mountain crafts on display and for sale.
In Hendersonville is the farm/home of author Carl Sandburg. It is really a family friendly place.Little kids tend to like it, as do Carl Sandburg fans.
Is that enough? I can do more!

Thank you, Theresa!

Looks like there will be plenty to do! It's funny to me that my MIL and SIL's have lived there for many years and had no insights on things to do other than Biltmore Estate!

Thanks for your ideas!
