I have been using Intermediate Language Lessons with my son and daughter. My daughter will be going into the 6th grade. Althugh we have skipped around a bit and are only a little more than half way done I am wondering if I should start her with Lingua Mater next year with her. I don't want to overwhelm her. Any advice?

Hi Blessed,
I'm sorry I didn't see this message sooner. Things have been pretty crazy since Holy Week. (You know, it's that "sacrament" time of the year.
I would wait and do Lingua Mater in 7th grade and go ahead and finish out the 6th grade portion of Intermediate Language Lessons. I just think LM is a better fit for 7th grade, requiring a lot more structured writing than ILL. There is a great benefit to doing all of ILL and doing the more unstructured writing and dictation, etc. You can PM me if you need more specifics.

Thank you for responding! I plan to further in ILL but I did order it. I think she may be able to handle it next year (this fall) but if not, I'll switch back to ILL.
I do have another question for you (and anyone else who may be reading this.) My DD is 11, at what age would you recommend doing written narrations and how many per week...of course I realize this may vary per child but I'm interested in your opinion. TIA!

My oldest daughter (12 in July) started Lingua Mater last year and did wonderfully with it! She finished it up this year. She absolutely loves writing, and I'm very comfortable teaching writing (math, not so much ) so it worked well. :)
As far as written narrations go, she usually produces at least one a day, most often in history or literature, and occasionally in science. She's been doing written narrations since she was about 9. Of course, now they're longer and more detailed. :)
I think it depends on the child though. My almost 10yo can't stand doing written narrations and only does a couple of written narrations a week, if that.

Fwiw, we use ILL 4th through the 6th grade (using Margot's updated ILL with the 6th gr. revisions), adding in formal grammar in the 6th grade year, which helps when we get to LM. We use LM in the 7th and 8th grade, spreading it out so that we have plenty of time for narrations as well. As Margot suggests, we also study grammar formally alongside LM. This along with word study has worked well prepping for high school with a boy who is finishing up 9th grade and wrote an average of 4 summaries/narrations a week all year long. I am sold on these programs, altering them to fit each child. They really worked well for us. I have one beginning PLL and another starting ILL at the 6th grade level this fall.

No problem. I just love it when there are resources available that are simple, affordable and nonconsumeable. I was at a curriculum swap recently and moms were talking about la programs over $100 a year...for the elem. ages! All I could think of was how ILL alone covers 3 years and I think I bought mine for under $30.
