Yesterday, we purchased a hopscotch rug. (I know, I know, a piece of chalk and a driveway work just as well, but it has been raining a lot and we are decorating our dds room.)

The problem is...I haven't played since elementary school and I'm unsure about the rules. The places on line don't answer my specific questions.

The basic part of tossing a bean bag, or some other marker, on square one, then two, and so on...... hop over the marker going down, pause to pick up marker on the way back...I got.   

What happens if two or more are playing? Are the players supposed to hop over their marker AND the additional player's marker? It looks odd when I see a foot go down on the square that holds a marker, even though it's not their marker.

Any other rules I should know? Is this pure fun to play to completion or is there a winner declared? oh, what happens if their foot touches the square with the marker? IF they do skip additional player's marker, then should there be a limit of how many can play?

Wow, that's a lot of questions for such a "simple" game!

Any hopscotch expert willing to help us out?

Goodness! Thank you, Donna. The Hopscotch 101 didn't even come up in my search.

I don't remember turning the squares into "house", but what do I know, I can't remember the basics.

It is supppposed to be a simple game. LOL Sometimes reading the rules is more complicated than learning from someone else playing or watching the game.

Hopscotch originated in Britain during the early Roman Empire. It was initially designed as a training regimen for Roman foot soldiers who ran the course in full armor and field packs, as it was thought this would improve their footwork. Roman children imitated the soldiers by drawing their own boards and creating a scoring system, and "Hopscotch" spread throughout Europe

When I was in school we took turns, but everyone started at 1 and then picked up where they left off at the end of their turn. The first person went until they either failed to get their marker in the correct square or they didn't make their jumps right; then the next person got their turn. There were no other markers on the grid except your own.

We never played the whole "House" thing, either. We would also add a layer of difficulty by making people hop each square one at a time even when there were two next to each other.

Oh, and don't feel bad about buying a hopscotch mat. We don't really have anyplace to use chalk (townhome), and it is really nice during rainy and winter days. We've even taken it to homeschool playgroup, and it's been a big hit.
