My youngest dd is Kirsten Therese. She was born on September 30, which is actually the anniversary of the day St. Therese died. So, we celebrate Kirsten's birthday one day and her feast day the next. The feast celebration is just now taking shape (she's three this year and we didn't really celebrate the Feast of St. Therese the year she was born). One thing we do is buy a couple dozen sweetheart roses (little flowers) and help Kirsten to do flower arranging in vases throughout the house. Other ideas?

I'd like to hear suggestions also. Renee turns one on Oct. 1. One thing I'm contemplating is a pilgrimage for Mass at St. Therese parish. Do you have a chapel or church or shrine nearby?

The feast of St. Therese is a newer feast, so the field is wide open for ideas. Because both your "Little Flowers" are young, I'll just mention some simple ideas before my head hits the pillow.
We know so much about her childhood, and even have photos, that it makes it so much easier to teach our children about "flesh and blood" person...some of the saints seem so distant. Her love for Jesus ran so deep at such a young age, too, that it's great food for discussion. There's a book called The Photo Album of St. Therese which would be wonderful to pore over with your children...her image became so familiar to me growing up that she seemed like family. There are loads of coloring books and story books for all ages about St. Therese...
I love her relationship with her father, with him calling her his "Little Queen." I think her love for her parents (and such great parents she had!...) helped so much in loving her Faith and Jesus so much.
The story of her making a choice with the dolls and saying "I choose all!" is a great point to illustrate loving completely.
The sacrifice beads she started at a young age....learn how to make them and then use them.
Catholic Culture has several ideas for rose crafts.
I was thinking for the young girls to have for the nameday feast each year a crown of roses (either artificial or real) to wear. Some of these images show her with a crown, and her First Communion photo even looks like roses (or some kind of flower).
For food, this feast is "[a] good excuse, if you need one, for buying flowers and partaking of French food." {The Oxford Companion to the Year). But making a dessert and decorating with icing roses, handmade or storebought seems very appropriate.
Crafting with marzipan would be a fun project, including making marzipan roses for the dessert.
If I remember correctly, one of the towns nearby where she lived held the veil of St. Veronica...that was one speculation of her taking the name "and the Holy Face." This could take you on a rabbit trail...but probably another year....
Final thought...but I think of Theresa and lace, because her mother made lace as a cottage industry until she got too sick. Was it Alencon lace...I'm too tired to remember? Anyway, make a beautiful cloth with lace to use as the special runner or tablecloth or even just a special placemat for her nameday. Then as she gets older, learn about crocheting, tatting, and other kinds of handmade lace....

The Catholic Children's Treasure Box books, #1-6, have a lovely story about St. Therese. The illustations are very 'girlie' and the text is perfect for a bright 3 year old. This story focuses strongly on the love of her family.

One year, for our Catholic girls club, I purchased a box of red silk rose petals from the craft store (in the bridal favors section). I read the girls the story of St. Therese and how she promised to let fall a shower of roses from heaven to those who asked for her help. I let each girl write a special prayer request on the rose petals, and we laid them by our huge statue of St. Therese. It was a simple activity, but I think the girls really liked it.

One other little thought...and this comes merely from my own perspective. I've read her autobiography and I Believe in Love several times (plus many others). I'm really bad about Scripture memorization. But in reading her life and spirituality you see how closely she is linked to the true Gospel message and also St. Paul. For the first time in my life I wanted to memorize passages for prayer and reference that referred to her spirituality, Confidence in God. I think this could be started at a young age. But these passages could also be copywork for her feast, or made decoratively to display for her feastday next to her statue or picture.
I'm thinking of simple ones, like from the Mass of the Day:
Mt 18:3-4 Truly I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
Mt 11:25 Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth; you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the kingdom.
Other suitable Gospel quotes:
Mt 6:25-34...Therefore doe not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Let the day's own trouble be sufficient for the day.
Mt 6:33 Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.
And then quotes from St. Paul:
2 Cor 12:9-10 Gladly, therefore will I glory in my infirmities that the power of Christ may dwell in me....For the sake of Christ, then I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities; for when I am weak, then I am strong.
Phil 4:13 I can do all things in Him who strengthens me.

Good idea about the Scripture copywork Jenn. I thought of another craft that we used for Our Lady of Guadalupe. If you take a bunch of celery and cut it off about 2in. from the bottom, the ends form a rose. Really! Cover them with red or pink acrylic paints and print onto paper. Great for a banner or wrapping paper.

Start a Novena to St. Therese (either one of the longer ones or the shorter "pick me a rose" prayer) on Sept. 22 to end on her feast day.
I don't know why I'm remembering all these Hereshy Kiss crafts now, but the Hershey Kiss roses would be a fun addition to the feast day celebration. They turn out really cute and everyone loves them.
same craft -Hershey Kiss roses but with actual photograph to show how pretty they are.

I'm just brainstorming today for rose ideas for this cake. I don't really make frosting roses worth showing off  . I have plenty of beautiful roses in the garden still, so I could use them fresh. Or petals. Any other ideas for cake roses....edible or not?

I'm not sure I understand the question....are you trying to incorporate the real rose petals in your cake, or are you still going to try to make icing roses?
I have a few cake decorating books, one very, very old one from inherited by my brother in law from the German immigrant bakers in his family. This had an idea of making a plaque with the icing rose decorations. Plus there were other ideas of making small petit fours or small French Pastries with one rose on top.
If your roses aren't gorgeous, there are still the simple half roses and rose buds to put right onto the cake instead of the rose nail.
For a really fancy challenge, how about a basket cake full of roses?

Although your daughter is young now, I just think she'll have fun later on crafting with marzipan making roses. Just think of it as an edible clay!

With older children you could visit a Carmelite Monastery and stay for Vespers. It's very beautiful to listen to the nuns chanting evening prayer. We're blessed to have a Monastery less than an hour away and this year we're celebrating St. Therese's feast day with a Mass that includes a sister making final vows ~ Sister Edith of the Wounds of Jesus ~ such a beautiful name! I've been to final vows once before and it's such a grace filled moment. The atmosphere of Joy is nothing less than supernatural.

I'm not sure yet. I was wondering if there were any other materials with which to make rose decorations. Thanks for the rose tutorial. I may try it.

Can't you candy rose petals? I'm pretty sure they're edible, and can be used in salads, too. Do you have "hips" on your roses, yet? How about making Rose Hip Tea? Or make sachet---maybe, for a quick fix, you could even buy some sachet, and mix in some of your own rose petals, tying the mixture up in a pretty hankie or doilie or something and add a pretty ribbon.

Yes....I found that information the other day. In fact that's what I'm going to try. You dip them in egg white and then sugar. We'll try it today and have plenty of time to switch gears if it doesn't work out.
