Hi Ladies,

I'm in the market for a new sewing machine. Trying to read reviews online is too overwhelming and time-consuming. I'm not an expert seamstress, but I definitely want to sharpen my skills and practice more. Anyway, right now I have a really cheap Brother and it drives me crazy. I would like to find one that is mid-range--like a Honda Accord as opposed to an economy car or Mercedes. I don't need to do embroidery or anything too complicated.

For those of you who have a fancy sewing machine like a Viking or one of those other two that I can't spell right now, (Phaff? or Husqu...) was it worth it? Is it really worth the extra money?

I have a Janome, and I love it. It's a basic machine (meaning no fancy embroidery components, etc.). It is solid, sturdy, and easy to maintain.

I've looked at those Mary.. though my reasoning started with.. what can I get worked on here in town (there's one store that sells and repairs machines) but they have a very good service record (meaning the machines don't need it much).

I loved my "White".. it was a pretty basic machine.. but needed more work after 10+ yrs than it was worth.

I believe that the machines that are good tend to have all metal parts (inside) not the plastic ones that some of the cheaper ones have.

Oh and my preference is to find one that's not digital.. I know people who rave about them.. but invariably they don't have small children in the house (gee what happens if you push this button while mommy is sewing

)

Can I ask what drives you crazy about your Brother? I have one and it sounds like my sewing skills are on par with yours. I'm wondering what about my frustration is my machine and what is a skill that I need to sharpen.

I have a Huskystar, which is Husqvarna's cheap brand.

Still has the Husqvarna quality as far as all the interior machinery, but not so many bells and whistles. I really like it!

I love my Janome. (A memory craft 3000) I am probably about an advanced beginner, but I find it easy to use. Being an Army family, it has been moved a bunch since I purchased it about seven years ago. My girls use it for 4-H and it has been transported back and forth between weekly meetings - and probably dropped more times than they will admit. It has never needed service (yet!) and I am really glad I bought it. Now if I only can use up some of that fabric I tend to accumulate.....

I have a Bernina, maybe one of those fancy brands you are referring to, but they are excellent made machines.

Old Berninas have a great reputation...it's what I'm keeping my eye out for.
