I don't know whether to laugh or cry!

ETA: I just finished the article. I no longer think it is amusing. It is so sad, the poor woman. Maybe she actually loves children and being a mom? Why do they treat motherhood as a disease?

They're kidding right? Unbelievable. The terms they used like "collecting babies" is ridiculous. Also, having them on display? At least she keeps them with her instead of leaving them home while she travels all over the world doing her work with the UN. I'm not a fan of hers or Brad Pitt, but come on people!

My dh wouldn't read the article after he saw the first paragraph. He basically said it was stupid beyond words.

 Of course, he's a sailor...

Poor Angelina, to be labeled by a journalist who can't even spell Jon Voight's name correctly. (I haven't checked to see if the editors caught it, but it was spelled "John" last night.)

Here's what Melanie wrote about the piece. It's interesting to note that she wrote while in labor...

Might this article have something to do with the fact that Angelina wrote an op-ed in the Washington Post that was pretty balanced and quasi-supportive of our troops in Iraq? How dare anyone in Hollywood say anything that isn't ultra-leftist!

Isn't she amazing? Maybe labor really gets the wheels turning. I've never tried to do anything other than not cry!

The whole article is completely ridiculous. Not that I am in love with Angelina Jolie, but she has been doing a lot of work with humanitarian relief efforts for the past few years. And a lot of people who do that sort of work wish that they could afford to do more. It has got to be hard to go to these countries and see some of these poor children and not want to help them

I love where the article implies that she's like Liz Taylor and that even though she is employable she's not really working on her career because she is hiding behind her children. In the 5 years since she adopted Maddox she's made 14 movies. It's just sad the way she's neglected her career.

Never mind the fact, that even if she is taking her kids with her everywhere she probably has a whole team of nannies like every other actress who continues to make movies. I'm sure that she has more opportunities to take more "me time" than the average mom with only one or two kids under the age of five. Not to mention the fact that she can afford professional house cleaners and beauty treatments.

 Stupid, stupid article.

I was bothered by this segment, particularly:

"Psychologists say depression is not uncommon among Mother Earth types like Farrow and Jolie. Mother Teresa, the giver of all givers, suffered from clinical depression most of her life, according to a recent story in Time magazine.

"Just as reports revealed a severe 25-year long case of depression for Mother Teresa, any person who rescues others so much so that they neglect or abandon their own spirit, might be headed for a similar state of overwhelm and depression," said Honos-Webb, who wrote about the topic in her book "Listening to Depression" and has written several books about depression, parenting and the psychology of pregnancy and birthing. "

Who said Mother Teresa neglected or abandoned her own spirit? It is a sign of advanced spiritual growth to experience a dark night of the soul. There are an awful lot of leaps of logic in this piece...

Elizabeth, that's the part that perplexed me the most about this article. Our society simply doesn't accept that abandoning ourselves is a good thing.

I have been praying as of late, asking God how I can love him better, and how I can be a better person. The answer I keep getting over and over is "Serve More". I've received this answer in so many ways. I can be the best me by giving more. I can love God best by serving more.

How can I as a mother give more? Oftentimes this translates in to having more children! I don't understand what could be wrong with putting aside my personal issues and focusing more on my children.

It was a disturbing article in how it reveals how two-faced the feminist movement really is.

Actually, what bothers me is that they say she sufferred "clinical depression" which implies it was a medical fact of which it most certainly is not. The most that anyone can say from her writings is that she was deeply sufferring spiritual conflict.   That does not mean she was in any way whatsoever clinicly depressed - as in she was suffering a mental disorder.

And I have no idea why anyone would refer to Mother Teresa as a "mother earth type". She was a "Father, son, and Holy Spirit" type thank you very much!

Gals, I find this discussion interesting... partly because I only really became aware of Angelina Jolie after she had 4 kids (I figure there must be something more about a celebrity who seems to love motherhood as much as I do).

But really, ABC? Do we really expect any of their writers to present a balanced, truthful, logical view of what motherhood or depression is? Or understand Mother Teresa's struggle the way we do? I've long given up on hoping to see anything that makes any sense from these mega networks. Their writers don't do their research, they make sweeping statements about people and situations about whom/which they don't have a clue, etc.

While I love that people like Melanie are writing to combat this kind of trash, these days I'm just too weary to even pay attention to what the culture-of-death/popular media is saying. If I read stuff like this and had to ponder it all in my head.... it would definitely drive me batty -- and I'm already batty enough just with my daily life and personal struggles.

Well, my .02. Going back to decluttering....

 | .It's the women who have their 2.2 kids and their "career" who take the most antidepressent drugs. Some time ago I read an article by a German psych. where she stated that because of the lack of morality in the culture, there is an epidemic of mental disease in the population, mostly in women. Also a health ins. saleswoman once told me that I would be surprised at how many women are on Prozak these days. |
