My brother will be in the hospital for a few days at least. They have really given my Mom some bad news.
They did a few tests. His epiglottis isn't working right. He is aspirating some of his food/medicine. They feel that that is what caused the pneumonia, although they don't know for sure, as everyone has been so sick around here too.
They told my Mother, basically, that she can 1.) not do anything, in which case he will likely aspirate his food/med again, and develop pneumonia again, and it will eventually kill him.
or 2.) they would put in a tube (but not a g or j tube, another kind which is escaping me at the moment, maybe "peg"?), but that there is some evidence that this type of feeding tube will cause him reflux, resulting in him aspirating, and the same scenario as #1.
They didn't mention the other types of feeding tubes, for some reason, but it seems that is not an option at this point?
We talk with some other doctors tomorrow.
