Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This is part a prayer request and part a question.

I am having a really hard time with a lot of doubts right now - I often think how fitting it is that the parish I attend is named for St. Thomas the Apostle.

I went to a Parent Sacramental Prep meeting last night where our Deacon gave a talk on the Eucharist. I guess I got a little anxious when he showed clips from a video on Eucharistic miracles but the ones he showed did not have any kind of official approval - in each there was a comment about "there being no comment from the bishop" or "dioscen authorities". I don't know that others even caught these comments if they weren't listening for them, KWIM?

How do you all handle things that are maybe happening but have no official word. I mean, there are so many Eucharistic miracles that have stood the test of time and scrutiny - why use those in a teaching situation that might turn out to be fraudulent later? Why take the chance?

Would you say something or no? When do you question and when do you let something be? Maybe I am just being extra sensitive?

The video was so disturbing. Writing this out this morning - I realize how unnerved I actually am.

Now why was the deacon showing this video? In what context for Sacramental prep? Was this to ignite in the parents that this is truly Jesus in the Eucharist?

Was his film more of modern supposed miracles?

I think I would have to say something to the pastor. This is mere distraction and can take away from the focus. There are all sorts of eucharistic miracles that have been approved that could have been used. And this is so unnecessary to one's faith!

The extra miracles are not necessary to believe. Every day the real miracle is that the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ. The miracles that the deacon showed you are just external signs to help reinforce and help those with weak faith.

There's a story of St. King Louis who was told there was a Eucharistic miracle nearby, and was urged to go see it. He refused, saying that it was unnecessary for his faith to see it, but rather it was for those who were weaker and didn't believe in the True Presence.

There is a book Eucharistic Miracles Joan Cruz.
And here is a website of approved miracles. And another one.

I'm praying that you can be more at peace and God will show you what to do. I'm sorry I'm not much help -- this is just a mish-mash of thoughts.

Donna, please be assured I will pray for you.
Now take a deep breathe, private revelations can be really overwhelming to some folks. That is OK! Just relax and realize, you are not obligated to believe private revelation, any of them, even the rosary. Now you may be silly for dismissing that one, but you DO NOT have to believe in it in order to go to heaven.

Remember doubting is not always bad, let your prayer be, "Lord I believe, help my unbelief". Then sit back and realize Our Mother will guide your heart. Our LAdy will direct you, with her spouse, the Holy Spirit. Do what you need to do, but try to be at peace.

Offering Aves for you now!

Thank you for the prayers.

I went with my gut and spoke to our priest. He was very reassuring and glad I came to him - he did not know about the video and felt it did not sound like something in line with church teaching.

Later in the day - I did find a brief Catholic News Service statement as of Jan 2008 that stated that this particular "seer" and her followers have excommunicated themselves because they have not followed the direction of Church authorities.

I am sure our Deacon was not even aware. It's the one thing I have not gotten used to since coming back to the church - this need to feel on guard all the time. I find it is really difficult sometimes to discern what is good for a healthy Catholic spirituality and what is not.    Does this get easier??? It's been three years and I still feel I haven't quite found my niche, anyone else KWIM?

I do know what you mean, Donna. I don't think it gets easier but I do think that I have become more skilled at knowing what to be concerned about, what to discuss with the priest, and what to let slide. Some of my spiritual growth has come right in the midst of being alert and sifting through difficult circumstances. It has helped me to have resources, like this forum, outside of my local parish to help me to discern.

Love,
