Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Some of us are just not math people. My son is 9th grade and is in pre-Algebra using Teaching Textbooks. It's going very well, he is even doubling up on some lessons.

But I am getting stressed because there is no way we can fit in Algebra I and II and geometry before the PSATS in the fall of 11th grade.

My plan is to go back to Saxon for Algebra I and II since they incorporate geometry in those texts. And work through summers.

But he is doing so well and likes Teaching Textbooks.

Does anyone have a better idea? Am I stressing too much about the PSATs?

Bridget,

Why is he going to take the PSAT? Just for practice or for scholarship purposes?

For practice I guess. I doubt we are national merit finalist material.

I read somewhere about the Chalk Dust company. They have a 15 lesson test prep for math. I was going to use it in September with my 16 year old for the PSAT's in October.(Google in Chalkdust.com or Chalkdustcompany.)

Right now he is in tenth grade and we are working in Alg II(Lesson 45) and Geometry from Teaching Textbooks. He does 1/2 lesson of Geometry per day and a full lesson on Alg II. We will be doing math all summer with all of our children.

From what our latin teacher says, you need to know algebra I and some geometry for the SAT.

Anyone else about what math is on PSAT and SAT?

I'd hate to rush a child just for doing the PSAT for practice - I'd say keep going with what is working and worry less about the practice PSATS. I assume he will do the SAT ( or whatever) again, after the practice run? That is what I'd prepare for....

My kids haven't taken the PSATs, if that's any help.

You can get one of the SAT practice test books -- we have Gruber's and just look through it for where his gaps are, then do a bit of SAT practice and studying the book during the summers or for a few minutes a day.   Gruber's includes a complete brush-up for the different areas of math and it might help at least give him an idea of some of the things that would otherwise stump him.
