Mark has a tooth!  And he is working on a second one. Both are on the bottom. He loves using them.  Every time we settle in to nurse, he bites me - hard! Of course I startle and unlatch him - and he starts to scream. 
I try to keep my finger close by so if it seems he's going to bite I can unlatch him real quick but I'm easily distracted by the other children. He catches me off guard every time!
I've never really had a full on biter before, seems I do now and I'm not real sure how to deal. He's 6 months old.

OUCH!  . Here's an article that can help.
I had my best luck when I pulled the baby into my breast deeply. It takes a bit of practice because my automatic reaction was to *yank* the baby off (  ). When pulled in tightly, baby's nose became blocked, causing baby to push away from breast with mouth open.
Hope you find something that works for you, Lisa. What has worked for others here?

Couple of things.. I'll give them something for the teething. First choice is something like the hyland's teething tablet's.. that lowers the discomfort level and makes them less inclined to want to bite because it feels good.. but depending on the child and situation, I've also used a topical numbing agent or tylenol. I've had one or two that hurt so much that they can't latch on without pulling off from the pain.. those the hylands doesn't work for.. and I give the tylenol.
Also, he's getting big enough that he may be getting distracted by your interuptions.. so he may be stopping the actual nursing because of the same distraction you have and that's when he bites (because he's not nursing)
Or.. he may have found it as a way to get your attention to himself instead of you getting him attached and "ignoring" him by dealing with the others.

The pulling the baby in to the breast trick has worked with both of mine so far. It takes a day or two but just when I think I have a permanent biter they stop. Neither child repeated the biting with subsequent teeth.

Another proponent of the pulling the baby in to the breast...it has always worked for me! Try it for a few days, Lisa...And whip out the frozen washclothes for him..he must be miserable!

Thanks everyone. The funny thing is he doesn't seem bothered by the teeth growing in at all. I actually didn't even notice he was teething until I SAW the pearly little tooth when he smiled at me!
I will try pulling him in, and be more careful about the distractions. Hopefully this passes quickly!

Eek...I just wanted to say I feel for you and I'm right there with you! My Colette is about the same age (8/10/07) and BOY does she bite! She got her front bottom two teeth on the same day at about 2 1/2 months old (super early, especially for my family!) and the top two just came in the other day. She bites me EVERY time she nurses, she seems to grab on with the teeth and then get to nursing. Everything I tried didn't help...she still bites every time. I just cringe and bear it. Pulling her in if she stays clamped down works though! I hope that works for you!

I can commiserate too and encourage you to try everything you can to help him stop even if it means paying extra close attention; tell the other children that this is very important! My youngest was only 4 months when he got his first tooth also on bottom and he wasn't miserable about it either, but he bit me so hard that he damaged me badly. I had to pump and feed him with a bottle while I healed. It was agonizing!!! Physically and emotionally!
