Here's a great way to get info about various countries -- we borrowed the Rick Steves Eastern Europe DVD from the library -- 6 shows about eastern Europe -- Poland, Bulgaria, Eastern Turkey, Slovenia/Croatia, Czech Republic, and Hungary.
Rick has a nice way of doing these shows -- great overview of the history, always points out the religious (both Catholic and Jewish) heritage of these countries, etc.
Could lead to many rabbit trails .... and they're all very "clean"  (that is, suitable for the whole family) .....
He's got Asia and other European countries too -- the DVDs are great because the actual PBS shows are about 30 min.

We LOVE Rick Steve's Travels! He is very clean to watch, not boring at all, and doesn't do just the rich people tourist-y stuff either. He encourages travelers to go off the beaten tourist path and explore the real people and culture.
He usually takes his family with him, (wife, son & daughter) although he doesn't always put them on camera. We've been watching him for years and just the other day saw a newer episode and thought, "wow that boy of his sure has grown!".

I love Rick Steves, too. I will say I have found he does have a few slips of being non-religious...I won't say anti-Catholic, but there is a downplay on religious places for their true significance. And once in a while he shows a more liberal side...but all in all, he's GREAT!!!  I'm glad to hear ideas on using it for school. I'll have to check out my library. I forget that I could borrow instead of buy things.

I caught two of his shows in Spain the last couple of weeks and I thought they were some of his best! But that might be because I'm on a Spain kick!

We found, at least in his East Europe ones, that he was very good on the religion stuff -- going more to the churches and synagogues than to the "normal" tourist sites. His attitude was quite reverent and we were thinking he might be Catholic -- but a "western" variety if you know what I mean (I'm from San Fran, so I can say things like that!)

Another Rick Steves fan here! I also like the back-roads flavor of his stuff. We catch his shows on PBS once in a while, but I hadn't thought of looking for his DVDs at the library - thank you Mary.

I've been a Rick Steves travel fan for years, but make no mistake, he ain't Catholic. He's ultra-liberal. In one of his travel books, he actually put aside travel discussion long enough to write a very pointed diatribe against the Republicans, a real, in your face "who-could-be-so-stupid-as-to-support-these-kind-of-people" kind of polemic. I found it quite offensive...and like I say, I'm a fan! Also, many of his travel books are pretty critical of the Catholic Church, at least the ones I've read, loaded with snide remarks. I know he means to be humorous and witty, but...
I do appreciate his off-the-beaten-track approach to tourism, and his joie-de-vie, and I often quote his maxim about traveling with children: "If I have to change diapers, I'd rather be changing them in Paris!" But unless he's had a major conversion recently, he's very much a creature of the liberal West-Coast mind-set.

Just watched back to back Smart Travels with Rudy Maxa and then Rick Steves. I enjoy them both....anyone else use Smart Travels?

Glad you agree. I'm remembering now that we had an Italian phrase book to use in Rome and came across some phrases that surprised and offended us. "I am a lesbian" was one of them!

Reviving an old thread here but thought I should pop in to mention that our family recently watched this Rick Steves' dvd and I was quite disappointed. The dvd is broken down into several parts. The 1st part was fine, however in the 2nd part he showed the nude bathers along one of the rivers in Germany. It was very discreet, however, this was quite shocking for my very innocent dc to see. He also showed some scantily-clad caberet-type shows. Following my instincts, I told my kids that it was time for bed & my dh & I watched the 3rd part.
The 3rd part features Steves & his family on vacation. On one of their days in Germany he & his wife went to a spa. They were unclothed the entire time and a woman attended to him, i.e. massaged him, dried him off, etc. Men & women use separate facilities at the spa except when they meet at the pool for a swim. Both he & his wife swam in the nude while there were other people in the pool as well. You can imagine how much I was thanking my dc's Guardian Angels when we got to that part!!

Thanks! I never heard about these! They have the DVDs and the travel books in our library system!
