Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi--DH and I are preparing to move out there, and I need to put some feelers out about the two closest parishes to us. I've heard the OKC archbishop is not as orthodox as the Tulsa bishop, and that some of the parishes have a tendency towards a lot of...well...how shall we say it? "Interesting" takes on things.

We will be living in Stratford, between Pauls Valley and Ada...too far from Norman or OKC to go to the TLM much, if ever, and I'm not really wanting to drive more than 30-45 min to go to Mass anymore (the twins are getting to "that" age, iykwim). I'm trying to find out about the priests and parishes in those two towns, and if the priests are HS friendly (as you all know, some are, some aren't).

If any of you know anything, or can find out anything, I'd appreciate it. If you would feel better PMing me about it, that's fine, too.

Thanks

Rachel

Mass Times listing of parishes near you and how far away they are.

You might call or ask around and see if any of them are offerring a latin mass. more and more parishes are these days. I don't know much about the archbishop, bishop over there. I know that our Bishop is homeschool and traditional mass friendly. I also know there are at least 1 and I think 2 Catholic homeschool groups in the OKC and surrounding area, which would include you I would think. St. Gianna's homeschool group may be able to help you out in finding a parish? Have you been able to contact them?

We just moved from the OKC Archdiocese. The Archbishop recognizes homeschooling, but would prefer that all students enroll in Catholic schools. He did say a mass every year for the homeschooling community usually in the spring.

There are quite a few homeschooling families in the OKC area. I am not sure who your priest is, but there are many good priests in the area. Theresa H.(also on this forum) lives close to where we moved from. Unfortunately, it is closer to Kansas that to you.

Homeschooling in Oklahoma is easy ... no paperwork, no requirements. You just move there and teach your children however is works best for your family.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

looking up the different parishes online is a big help too.. you can often get a feel for things by checking out the weekly bulletin.. what groups are associated with the parish type of thing

I just emailed a friend who used to be the director of Catholic Charities and the Family Life Office in the Tulsa Diocese for his take on parishes in the OKC area. I am only familiar with the Tulsa Diocese.

The FSSP is in both Tulsa and OKC. Are you familiar with   Clear Creek Monastery ? It is in the Tulsa diocese. It is wonderful, fully traditional Latin Mass.

Yes, those are both great and worthy of a trip out...
but for regular attendance, that's going to be a rather distant locale. what? an hour at least, maybe closer to 1.5 or 2?

We'll be about 1- 1 1/2 hrs south of Norman...so you can figure out from there.

Its DEFINITELY too far to go to regularly. Or at all, given the distance and the ages of the dc...

I have not heard from my friend yet. He is in the middle of a move to NY right now, so that could be the delay.

oooh. Sorry I didn't realize Tulsa and Clear Creek were so far. When you mentioned Tulsa diocese, I just thought of it. I live in TX but go to Clear Creek once a year.

Here is a reply from a friend in the OKC Diocese.

The pastor at St. Joseph's in Ada is a friend, Fr. Rusty Hewes. I met him when I was 15 years old -- he was a recent convert to Catholicism. He is very traditional and has one of the most disciplined prayer life of anyone I've ever met. That parish has always had some "old timers" that like to be in control. Occassionally, they make things a bit challenging for Fr. Rusty. I don't know how this family feels about the novus ordo. Fr. Rusty has a deep love for the Eucharist which manifests in the way he prays the mass.

Well, we're in OKC...WAAAY south. About 1 1/2 hr south of OKC's southernmost "border". It'd be a 3 hr drive for us to go to Clear Creek. Not something I'm going to do "for kicks" on a weekend, iykwim. ;-)
