Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hello There!

My boys have been using the Mammoth Math series by Maria Miller this year and they've been doing great until they got to long division and hit a wall. They just cannot "get" long division. I do the problem with them and they can seem to follow it, but on their own they forget all the steps. I even leave a sample problem on the board for them and they still blank out when doing their own work.

Are there any tutorial websites that would walk them through the process that you know of? I think there's a British math curriculum online? Maybe they teach it?

Have any of your children experienced this? What has helped them?

Thanks so much!
Many Blessings!

One thing I do is to right the symbols for each step at the top of their page. I make them talk through each step. This really helps.

I write out the steps for a reminder, and often rule up columns as a guide.

When I taught division in a classroom and at home I always had my students make up a sentence to use with the steps of division.

I think one of my classes' had the sentence Does My Sister Carry Big Dogs or something like that.

Divide Multiply Subtract Check ( the subtraction answer should be smaller that the divisor) Bring Down

DMSCBD should have been at the top of every page.

We underline the D because we make an underline blank above the first place we can divide into.
Also put an arrow from BD to Divide so we know to do it again.

Also, turn the page sideways so the lines line up the numbers or use graph paper.

Not sure if this helps but breaking it into repeatable steps seemed to get some kids over the hump of being overwhelmed by the big numbers and the concentration of math operations.

My fourth grade teacher, Sister Joan McIntyre, made us memorize the steps and recite them as we worked.

In doing long division, the very first thing I do is cover up all the numbers in my dividend except the first number.

I ask myself the question, will (divisor) go into (dividend)? No, so I uncover my next number.

You get the idea. It seems to work for my dc, too.

I like Does My Sister Carry Big Dogs!

Ana, I used some activities from this book from AIMS. It is not a full curriculum, but there are some great hands-on activities/lesson that teach the concept behind the algorithm. I remember the lesson on Long Division being particularly good.

HTH!
