I really need to get something to wear for the warmer weather and I cannot find any nursing dresses with sleeves and which are longer (mid to low calf length) - all the nursing dresses seem shorter and sleeveless. Please share ideas with me if you have a source. I am only 5ft2 and petite.
Or an alternative would be some nice skirts and nursing shirts - but I so love dresses.

I was going to link you to the same place as Lindsay. I got a dress from that company last year and was really pleased with it. I'm hoping to get another soon.

Can I ask how well the zippered nursing openings work? I am well-endowed, shall we say, so I have trouble with the typical vertical nursing openings. I prefer the lift-up nursing shirts with an underlayer. But the dresses with the zipper opening look nice. And I am thinking that the tops might be less bulky than what I am used to.
Thanks!

Thanks for the link Lindsay. I have a couple of questions
- how are the dresses on length - there are no Petite sizes?
- I presume I would be a small. How do the sizes run? I am a size 2-4
Thanks

Molly,
I too am...um...well endowed, especially after the baby comes. I have a friend who swears by the zippered vertical nursing openings because they DON'T gape like some shirts do when you're larger. I've never had one though.
I just ordered 2 mediums of this exact dress, but they haven't come in yet. I got sooooo frustrated finding no long nursing dresses out there anywhere. I'm excited about them coming in.
I wish I could give you an idea of how they look like they'll fit Marilyn. Hopefully, someone here has one and can give you more info.

I like to make or modify my own nursing dresses. Here is a good idea:
Buy a 2 piece dress- a tank dress with matching shirt/jacket. I find mine on ebay (often Coldwater Creek) or at the resale shop. A dress with no darts or lining. A shirt/jacket that buttons. Something like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/COLDWATER-CREEK-tank-Dress-Jacket-Set-10 -10p-M_W0QQitemZ320220376902QQihZ011QQcategoryZ63861QQssPage NameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
THEN, try on the tank dress. Mark an 8 to 10 inch opening over each breast, vertically. Reinforce with interfacing. Cut slits and neaten the openings with a hem or zig-zag stitch.
Now, just wear the jacket/shirt over the dress. To nurse, simply unbutton a few of the bottom buttons to access the nursing openings. (Obviously, you can never wear the tank dress with out this cover, since it has 2 big slits in it!)
This style has the advantage for us big-busted moms of being an easier "crop-type" opening. And the dresses don't scream NURSING DRESS! They look fashionable.
You can also SEW a tank dress and matching jacket from a standard pattern and add the nursing slits.
Hope this helps!
Peace,
Macmom

Jennifer,
I know you are snuggling with your new babe, but if you get a minute, I would love to hear how the nursing dresses are working out for you.
thanks!

Molly,
I have a few things to say about the nursing dresses. I ordered the red floral and the blue linen. Blue floral is (I hope and pray) on its way to my door for Katie's baptism this Sunday.
First, they are very well made, and very pretty. I like the zipper openings. They are concealed quite nicely in the way that they are sewn into the garment. You can't tell they are there at all - there's not a gigantic zipper screaming down both sides of your chest saying "look at me!"
Now, I'm ONLY about 1 week postpartum. I do lose the majority of my weight fairly quickly. Half of it is gone now. But....I'm old enough that my metabolism needs some help in losing some of the weight. I ordered a size Medium in the first two dresses (red floral and blue linen) because the dress appeared to have a fairly forgiving shape in the picture - no fitted waist, that kind of thing. But...the medium is REALLY small. Especially where I need the room - in the breast department!!! So, I'm not sure where you are in your weight loss, but you might consider ordering up a size. I ordered a large in the blue floral which will hopefully give me enough room for a few weeks as I try to lose (it isn't here yet.) I'm thinking of returning the other two dresses for larges as well. I think it would be easy to add a few darts to take them in a bit as I lose my weight, plus there is a tie.
As far as the length, it is quite nice. The dress hits me about mid calf. I'm average height - about 5'5" and usually about a size 8 when I'm not pregnant (but a LONG way from that right now!)
HTH Molly! I think I'll really like the dress if I can ever find a good size - it's hard to know what size to order online sometimes. If I were ordering from Motherwear (the old Motherwear sizes, not the new stuff) I'd have to order a small.
Just thought I'd mention, Motherwear has a factory outlet on ebay with a few dresses to choose from. It's hit or miss, but you might find something from one of their old catalogs.

I have only one of these dresses. The openings are, I agree, really fantastic in that you can't really tell they are there. I wore my dress to a summer wedding and told my mother-in-law, "This is a nursing dress," just to test it out and she looked at me hard and said, "How does it work?" I would wear these dresses even if I didn't have to nurse.
But as far as using the openings to actually nurse they are not as discreet as I like. I find that pulling up a shirt is simpler and more discreet. I would use a cardigan or shawl with these if I knew I'd be nursing in view of a lot of people. But the access is there. At the wedding last summer I just went into a side room and I felt fine.
I also found I needed a size up. I usually wear medium but my dress is a large. With the tie it fits very nicely. I'm on the short side, not quite petite, and these fall to my low calf. Really hoping to add a few more of these to my wardrobe!

I'm very happy! The size large came in and fits so nicely!!! With the ties, I think it will be fine even as I (hopefully ) lose the rest of the baby weight. I don't like things to be at all tight anyway.
So, I think it would be good advice that no matter your current size, you should really consider ordering one size up in this dress.

There are a couple of my all-time favorite style Motherwear dress (the vested dress) at ebay right now. I have this EXACT dresss....navy floral....and wore it ALL THE TIME 2 years ago in the spring/summer/fall with the last baby with a navy or white cardigan over it. It's a full a-line skirt for lots of movement and the cut is GREAT, as I wore it with about 30 lbs. weight difference and it always looked great. It's a perfect everyday dress. Heavier stretch knit.
Navy floral vested nursing dress from Motherwear in size med.
There is also one right now in an XL.
Here is a recent thread with maybe a couple more links: motherwear
And, one from awhile ago with some good ideas:Breastfeeding Clothes

Suzanne,
I have that dress, too. It has really lost its shape after years of wearing it though. It hangs off of me now especially at the neck line. And I am much heavier than when I first bought it. It is a medium. I am almost tempted to buy a new one, because it is a great dress!

Me too! In fact it's still in my closet, and I agree the style is very forgiving and flattering!!!! I couldn't recommend it more. Keep in mind that the older Motherwear stuff is actually sized a bit big. The dress in my closet is a size small, and fits me just fine right now (with about 18 lbs left to lose) - weird I know considering I had to order a large in the nursingmamas.com nursing dress. I adore this dress.
Molly, if your dress is a little stretched (as is mine with the last 3 kids all pulling and peeking out from under the vest part) could you pair it with a pretty white cardigan type sweater? I have a short sleeve sweater and a long sleeve sweater - I button the top two buttons and it covers the now gaping neckline and stretched vest. I just can't bear to part with this staple of my nursing wardrobe.
