Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've been reading Hainstock's homeschooling school years book and have been interested in some of the grammar activities... and started some of the black noun cards. (I'm actually trying to do a combination of Montessori and Elizabeth's Serendipity lessons). I also have another Language album that I downloaded that I've been reading.

However, I'm nervous about jumping into it... because I notice that there is not really a lot online in terms of Montessori grammar. It makes me wonder why. Neinhus was one of the few sites that carried colored grammar cards and boxes for amount of money.

Are any of you using Montessori Grammar boxes? How do you like it?

And... excuse the lack of links, I'm nursing a baby and have limited hands.

If you join the mm_share yahoo group mm_sharethere are files for all of the grammar box materials. I have not used them yet because my dd is not ready for it quite yet (still working on reading) and ds is too old. But I will be using them pretty soon.

Maryan,
I have an 11yo with a serious mental grammar block so I've been really doing a lot of remediation this year. All parts of speech work. I am using a couple of different things to help her including the grammar symbols and presentations from MTC.

I bought my grammar symbols from Kid Advance. They weren't very expensive. My dd is quite visual, and I decided to purchase them because any time she can *see* how a sentence is constructed it helps her. We have used them a little so far. I had hoped to get a little something more organized set up...but God had other plans for the beginning of my year. I do have plans to make more use of them, having her analyze sentence construction, etc,

I found and bookmarked MTC's Language Album back over the summer. There are some neat presentations in there I plan on using.

If I could go back to the second grade with her Maryan, I'd make sure she had a good foundation in the parts of speech. Nothing too forcefed of course, but I feel I failed her in this area and now she's struggling.

My 7yo second grader on the other hand has been watching our Schoolhouse Rock DVD with her and between that and the grammar symbols, he's already caught up with where she is. The visual association of a symbol for a part of speech seems to be helpful for both of them.

BTW, I don't use an exclusive Montessori approach to grammar either. We're using Winston Grammar as well.

Not sure if this was helpful or even answered your original questions.

Theresa - thanks for the link! And we're essentially at the same spot with my 6 yo... I'm just planning ahead a few months.

And Jennifer... thanks for your links and... that's exactly what I wanted to know.

I do think most grammar knowledge comes from reading good literature, but I wanted a fun way to introduce the parts of speech to the boys. My thought was that a visual would aid my 6 yo.'s understanding of sentence structure too.

I'm thinking that I'm just doing nouns ad nauseum for the rest of the year... I might get to verbs (not stressing about that with a newborn!!) But then I'd like to start the rest of the parts of speech for 2nd grade. (I think it will take me that long to understand the presentations and make the grammar boxes in my "spare" time anyway!!)

But... I didn't want to waste my effort even doing NOUNS this way if no one else found it helpful. Elizabeth Hainstock paints a nice picture of it... but I didn't know if it translated well into real life for anyone else!!
