Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Felix Mendelssohn was included in our October study of "Music Inspired by Literature" (the Shakespeare bit -- he composed incidental music for A Midsummer Night's Dream, including the famous Wedding March ). Now we're going to dig a little bit deeper.

Felix Mendelssohn at Classics for Kids- biography

You can hear "Scherzo" at the above links.

Today we are listening to this album:

The Story of Mendelssohn in Words and Music.

Yesterday was his birthday!

I haven't found a children's book to go with this study, so if you know of one, please share. Thanks!

I still haven't found a children's book for Felix, but I did find one for his apparently equally-gifted (but largely unknown) sister Fanny -- Hidden Music: The Life of Fanny Mendelssohn.

This might be a possibility: Mendelssohn: Illustrated Lives of great Composers.

I can't wait to listen to the clips!

I didn't know that Classics for Kids website was there, thanks for the information!

I was thinking there was an Opal Wheeler biography of Felix Mendelssohn, but maybe I misremember. I couldn't find one with a quick scan---but maybe someone out there knows? My kids love the Opal Wheeler books-simple and sweet, but we learn something from them every time!

Hi Kelly! Thanks for the recommendation -- still can't find the Mendelssohn, though we love Opal Wheeler too!

Playing Songs Without Words on my blog right now, if anyone hasn't heard it yet.
