Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

In case anyone wants a gentle, mother-friendly approach to teaching and learning Shakespeare, I'll be posting my lesson plans at my blog and will update here. Classes are very manageable, low-maintenance, non-stressful. I promise.

What grade levels is this for?   My dd is interested in Shakespeare--she's in 3rd grade. Is this something she could do?

Emily,
I'm teaching a co-op class of 6th-12 graders.
At home I'll be using it with my 4th grader as well.
It's friendly across the board.

Let me correct this. I was asked to teach a Shakespearean class to 6th-12th grade homeschoolers.

What I walked into today was a class of 5 very enthusiastic, intelligent young people who will in fact be teaching me all I need to know about the Bard.

Can't wait to see what you do, Cay. We'll be doing Julius Caesar in my high-school co-op class later in the spring, so I hope I can glean some inspiration!

(and aren't these classes great? I ADORE my high-schoolers. They've already taught me all about the Punic Wars and all kinds of other great stuff).

Shakespearean Joke

"Hey! I think I know what Shakespeare's favorite drink was."

What?

"A chocolate shake."

Get it?

As promised, these classes will be:

I wanted to remind everyone using them that the classes are as scheduled:

January 28

February 11, 25

March 10, 24

April 7, 21

May 5

So you have two weeks to filter through the links above and seep into Shakepeare's world and enjoy those books I've listed.

This low-maintenance frees your child to develop his/her own passion. If he/she finds another book or video on Shakespeare, let them delve into it. If he/she doesn't seem interested, just cover these basics in the next two weeks and you'll have peace of mind that you covered "that much" and they are at least learning "that much".

And if he/she is a budding Shakespearean or theatre-enthusiast who goes off onto his/her own rabbit trail with Shakespeare, sit back and enjoy the show. Really! Shakespeare would have wanted you to.

Thank you for asking, dear, but, no, you haven't missed anything. I posted this yesterday. I find it hard to plan and carry things out and then go back and blog about it. It's easier to write out my plans while I'm planning and share those. The plans always seem to look more attractive than the actual production.

Not that implementing the plans isn't fun though. My Shakespeare class is a very zealous, creative, intelligent bunch of kids. They floor me! Any plans I've made are basically going out the window. And I fully believe in letting children lead the way so as to build an appreciation and desire for their own learning, so I try to draw back and let them lead...plans or no plans.

You have to understand, I was never a theatrical person. I am the playwright, the one who stands behind the scenese and writes the drama. These children want to put on a full-production, costumes and all. They are suppose to meet today to practice for our end-of-the year program. I'm anxious to see what they put together. They are not planning the perform one of the plays but, rather, to perform an introduction to Shakespeare's plays and what the plays can still teach us today and why they are not the dull, lifeless castoffs of yesteryear. We so need Alice and her merry band of woodland fairies to come cast some magic over my plans.

One would really need to come sit in my classroom to catch the vibes and enthusiasm of Shakespeare as these children know him. Since that is not possible, I promise to share with all of you the script they come up with. And pictures.

For my own children, we're reading the picture books, surfing the web, and watching the DVDs. I need to get my children familiar with Shakespeare's plays before we can move further.

I still plan to post more plans on my blog. The plans can count for something, I think, and I'm glad others can benefit.

Keep watching Shakespeare 101. I'll get it in order soon, God willing.

Here is what happens when the children meet outside of classtime and the teacher is absent:

"Dear Mrs.Gibson,
I wish you could have made it! We actually got a lot done! We were able to figure out which play to pick scenes from (A Mid Summers Night Dream) and we picked parts for everyone. I am going to playing the part of Helena, Grace is Hermia, Cameron is Lisander, Jessica is Demetris, Robin is Puck, Ariel is the King of the Fairies, Kilah is the Queen of the fairies, and Michael will be the man with the signs! We were wondering if you would be our narrotor since we do not have that many actors/actresses in our class (we only have 7). We came up with many costume ideas and we accomplished a lot in the time alotted for our meeting. Well, I have to go now my mom is making Crawfish Fettuni, so I will see you on Monday!!
Sincerely,
K.D."

See what I mean!
Great class!
