Well, we have made it to the Feast of Our Lady of Altagracia, and I am so happy, particularly for Helen who will receive the greatest of all gifts very soon.

Yesterday, I was extremely interested when our new deacon, a young seminarian who will be ordained fairly soon, gave a sermon on his trip to the Dominican Republic. Thirty years ago, when there were no priests to ordain one year in our diocese, the Bishop at the time announced that we would share, even from our own poverty. The Dominican Republic has a priest shortage, so the diocese began a program of sending priests there every year to give the people the sacraments, visiting small, out-of-the-way villages and mountainous regions.

After Mass, I was able to point out a beautiful connection to the deacon. The Feast of Our Lady of Altagracia, January 21st, is the same day as the feast of the patroness of our diocese, St. Agnes.
