Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

OK, really this is NOT a New Year's Resolution! I used to be somewhat in shape - not a body-builder by ANY stretch of the imagination, but I'd enjoy a nice, slow 3-5 mile run or something like that--when I had lower grades to teach and less smallish wonders underfoot. Now, they are up as soon as I am and almost later at night (and truly, I have a hard time with motivation to exercise at 9pm). My oldest is 11 and 1/2, and for a while, I would go for short walks/runs while the littles napped. I would go around our block over and over and over. . . with the 2-ways. It did work, but depending on everyone's moods and what was happening in the middle of the day, and the weather, it wasn't regular. What do you all do for exercise? How do you make it a regular thing? I find when I exercise I am better able to handle the little things that come up, but am struggling to find an exercise routine.

I struggle with this too. I have found doing it in the am, before everyone gets up if possible, works best. I have a treadmill and TV/VCR in the basement and some weights. I can walk or do a video. I am home and can deal with the kids as they rise--but I try to rise way before them to get some exercise in. I cannot exercise at night--keeps me up to the wee hours

On the weekend during naps, my husband watches the kids and I try to hit the indoor pool each day for a 1k. That gets 2 workouts in so I only need one more good one during the week.

At the house we have an exercise bike which replaced our treadmill when we wore it out. The treadmill was a test of whether it would get used which it did, even by the kids. I usually ride the bike after lunch when the littles are napping. It's in the office so I can close the door. Occasionally I will do an exercise video instead.

One trick I have learned is, even if I sweat, to be willing to just wash my face, redo makeup, comb my hair, and change if I don't have time to shower. I have a neighbor who runs daily at an 8 min/mile pace (fast) but will look beautiful and never smell at the end of the day. She has workout outfits--running skirts with matching tops all bought at TJ Maxx or Ross--so she looks put together all the time.

I would try and keep track of your days and see if their is a natural lull, where everyone start feeling a bit sluggish. I try and get out at this period. When all is calm, I break away for an hour or so. My kids don't usually complain because they know that I will come back in a better frame of mind than when I left.

Mind you, I have older teens and tweens who can watch the littles for me. I was not able to do this when the kids were younger.

Good luck. Pray to St. Sebastian, as he is the patron of athletes.

My dh and I just joined a gym . When I work out at home I am good for a month and then slack off and then start again. It is so inconsistent. I have been to the gym every tues, thurs, and sat for 2 weeks and am loving all the variety there. They even have a lap pool so I can swim for my cardio which is a nice break from the treadmill or elliptical.

I work out the days I do because tues and thurs are dh's days off and on Sat I go when the little ones are in bed and my oldest ds (at home) who is 13 can watch them for me.

put the middle and older kids on bikes, littles in the stroller.. and everyone goes for a walk.. of course that doesn't work in the winter This let's mom walk at her pace and not be waiting up for kids.. the ones on bikes.. just don't go past the next corner until I get there.
