Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I bought First Language Lessons for my girls, 6 and 8, for this year. It isn't happening, at all. I was hoping that once the baby was here we would have time for that type of on-the-couch, cuddly school. He won't stop crying and when he does, it is not for long, and then the toddler needs me.

My point, actually my question, is I need to find a workbook they can do on their own. Can someone who has used both give me a comparison between CHC LOG and English 2 from Seton? We have used LOG, but I really don't think it is set up logically. The kids breeze through it, but I am just wonder about how well they are learning and retaining.

Thanks.

I don't know much about either of those programs, but I thought I would offer up that Singapore offers vocabulary workbooks that I'm planning to use when my older daughter is ready. They have sample pages and table of contents for each workbook at their website (http://www.singaporemath.com/Primary_English_s/33.htm).

I'll be honest; I'm not planning to do any formal grammar instruction until around age 10. I figure that she'll pick up a lot just from the word study workbooks and School House Rock. And it sounds like you use a little less stress right now.

Good luck!!

Thanks Barbara. I will look at that. To be honest, I am not too concerned with them learning the grammar now. I just need to keep them busy and productive. And I figure, if I am going to give them a workbook, I want it to be well thought out and not create confusion or more stress.

Post-partum sleep deprivation has set in (I am not exaggerating), so I am probably not making any sense!

Molly,
Have you tried Mad Libs? My 10 year old soars through these but she finds them so enjoyable.

Another thought...put the children around the coffee table with the Sunday funny papers while you sit and nurse. Let them look through the comics. They have to look for nouns, verbs, and every other part of speak you can possibly conceive.

I give mine the scissors and glue and they cut out the boxes and put all nouns on paper, all verbs on paper, etc.

If that gets too hairy (the glue and all) just have them show you what they find but they have to be able to label it. Or they can separate the boxes into labeled sandwich bags and show Dad when he gets home.

About the workbooks...I've used both. A page a day helped me feel we were covering all the bases...though I believe (and have seen) where most grammar is picked up by lots of reading). Seton will require you to give them a good explanation and daily checking of work, thus requiring that "on-the-couch, cuddly school". CHC is super easy but it gives the child a sense of success and basically requires nothing from the parent. Perhaps that's what you need for the rest of winter.

Thanks Cay. That helps.
You know, one minute they are bored and bickering, asking to watch videos, and I get all stressed and feel the need to buy them more school books. Then, the next minute they are writing stories, or creating masterpieces, or reading to each other, and all is right with the world!

If I can find the funds, I will probably get some workbooks for those "off" moments.

Molly, we had the same experience with LOG. It was likable, but way too easy. I think Seton is more challenging and Melanie was able to do it on her own. We are using Primary Language Lessons now and I love it, especially coming off LOG. There's so much more depth there. And I'm with you on the workbooks.   There are days when I just need to feel like I'm doing SOMETHING. With my ONE homeschooled daughter.
