Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

do you like for Catholic elementary american history? I am looking for something for several age levels--7-12 year olds.

We are enjoying Our Pioneers & Patriots by Fr. Furlong, supplemented by From Sea to Shining Sea (available through Ignatius Press).

I use Mercy Academy's multi-level North American History unit for its list of suggested reading (including living history books).

I'll be curious though to hear what others have to add.

I like From Sea to Shining Sea, as a spine, but I think it would be too much for a 7 year old.

There is also Catholic Faith Comes to the Americas, which Seton recommends for 2nd-3rd grade. It is very nice, though it stops early in the century.

I use From Sea to Shining Sea for my 10 yo. But we always supplement with tons of our own books and for the youngers, I just make sure that a certain number of our read alouds corresponding to each chapter are at a youngers level. The older does not at all mind having the easier read for a quick overview! That is what works for us.

Does this read like a text or is it more of a story form? We just have had a hard time finding something half-way engaging.

From Sea to Shining Sea is much more like a story than any other Catholic textbook. I generally despise textbooks in history, but this is one that does get used for more than a quick look up in the index in our house. It is fun.

I do tend to read it aloud to my 10 yo and then send him off reading related biographies, etc.   I'm not exactly using it like a textbook. At times it does jump a bit so it isn't a perfect sequential story, but it is okay. It does tend to be a better balanced text than most and does expect exploration of other sources as part of the program so it includes a reading list. We use this and Reading Your Way through History and Let the Author's Speak as guides for other books to use. (Also many of the book recommendations in this forum). Many of the better books go out of print quickly so that is frustrating, but we scarf them up as we are able.
