Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

After reading the great thread this time last year about home altars, we set one up at our house. It has really been a great thing for our family. It was very simple. This year I would like to place a cloth on the altar reflecting the current liturgical season. I'm finding it hard to tell from my liturgical calendar the colors I need.

Could someone please tell me all the colors of cloth I will need to reflect the liturgical season?

Thanks,

Waverley

Most certainly! This is the highlight for my 4 year old, discussing the color of the season. We use this liturgical calendar wheel to discuss, although it uses gold instead of white for those seasons. And Catechesis of the Good Shepherd has this song to remember the colors.

Basic colors are purple, green, red, and white (and rose).

Advent: purple/violet
Christmas: white
Ordinary Time: green
Lent: purple/violet
Triduum/Holy Week: red
Easter: white
Pentecost Sunday: red

There are also two Sundays in the year where the priest wears Rose or Pink, on the third Sunday of Advent (Gaudete Sunday) and on the Fourth Sunday of Lent (Laetare Sunday).

Besides the seasons, there are feast days of saints that have special colors:

Apostles and martyrs: red
Angels and all saints not martyrs: white
Solemnities and Feasts: White

Black is also a color that is sometimes used for All Souls Day, funeral and memorial masses. White or purple is another option.

Thanks so much. That is exactly what I needed.

We use the same liturgical calendar wheel and it has added a lot to our quest to live the liturgical year. I often find the kids looking at to see what "celebration" we have next. I'm thinking of putting one of the older kids in charge of changing out the altar cloth.

Thanks again,

Waverley
