Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Without getting into a debate as to whether or not we should give kids antibiotics . . .

My 5mo has a wicked ear/eye infection and is on oral antibiotics. I just (tried! ) to give him his second dose, and its tough to keep him from spitting it out.

He hasn't had any solids, nor have I given him a bottle, so I can't "hide" the meds in something else. Does anyone have any wisdom to share?? Thanks in advance!

I use a dropper and stick it in the side of the babies mouth and sloooowly drip it in. You'll probably have to stop every now and then and make sure everything is being swallowed. Poor baby!!

I use a syringe and put it in his lower jaw between the teeth and gums, all the way back.Push the medicine in, watching for swallowing. Keep him at about a 45 degree angle while you do it. That place is the best for avoiding gagging and spitting.
Bless you both!

This is basically what I do. Kind of let the baby suck on it.

me too....
I sometimes gently push under the chin, in the soft area, and it helps them to swallow too.

hope your little one is feeling better soon.

The side of the mouth past their tongue and if you blow on their face they will swallow on reflex. Also keep their head tilted back. Annie

and if that doesn't work (how I mostly do it) I've had some success with getting them latched on and nursing and slipping a dropper/syringe into the edge of their mouth and dribbling it in that way.

Thanks, everyone! I'm going to have to get my hands on a dropper and try that (painfully slow!) technique! I tried again with the syringe tonight, but he managed not only to spit it out, but get himself so upset about it that he threw up. This is the first ear infection in four children that I've dealt with, and was surprised by the throwing up part about it. Its pretty disconcerting to see a baby vomit.

Just as another option:
Sometimes you can use a small cup(Like a medicine cup) and kind of pour it in (in little bits)and when it comes back, you catch it in the cup and just keep throwing it back in--in little sips, of course It eventually all gets down.
Or you could try expressing some milk and mix it and try offering it that way.
You could also try(though he is young) putting it in a plain nipple and seeing if it works and he'll suck it down.Depending how much the dose is you could pour it all in or use that dropper and keep the nipple full as he(if he ) will take it that way.
Hope some of that helps and hope your little guy feels better soon....
