Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This year, my family will be focusing on completing a family altar during Lent.

Any other suggestions for family activities?

Hi Jennifer,
Last year I put together a few of the 4Real ideas for Lent here:
Lent with the Children

There are a few more links here (including a Loveliness fair)

Nissa posted about her Lenten Weblog.

An excellent resource.

thank you for the wonderful ideas. I think we may be adding few this year!

we have always hung a thick purple ribbon, draped on the Crucifix.
I also have a grapevine wreath wrapped loosely with the same purple ribbon.

the kids make or color Stations of the Cross that we hang and then pray on Fridays.

I am always looking for new ideas to keep the kids' attention.
We will be using the children's Way of the Cross coloring book and the older kids will be using the teen book at church.

We have a grapevine wreath that we have made to look like a crown of thorns, but we don't set that out until Holy Week.

Does anyone have ideas for "counting down" to Holy Week? Something like an Advent Wreath, but maybe in reverse? Maybe we should begin with 6 candles and have one LESS candle per week?

Last year, we had a poster that we decorated with 40 "stepping stones" through Lent, putting a cross sticker on each day. But I'm looking for something to use as a centerpiece on the table, which is where we consistently gather no matter what is going on and read from the Liturgy of the Hours.

Ideas?

We used one of these
last year.
Editing to say I just noticed the link doesn't work. It's a cross shaped candle holder that holds 7 candles. It's available from www.autom.com. Just do a search for Lent /Easter and you should find it. My kids really enjoyed it. It's very effective to light all the candles for prayer then blow out one on the evening of the first week, 2 on the second, etc. Saying the prayers in darkness on Good Friday was very effective.

I like this idea - just what I was looking for.
I will search Autom and see if it is still available... or maybe dh and sons can create something.

I've been stewing about a Liturgical Life in the home kind of blog, but I'm not sure I want to step into that. Thinking maybe I will give it a trial run through Lent and then reassess after Easter.

Or are there enough of these out there and I just don't know about them?

Katheryn Therese,

Thank you for the coloring book link. I'm ordering them to take with me on a trip to visit my sister in AZ in Feb.! She's going to get them for her children too. Can't wait to see all the cousins enjoying this together!

One other thing we do for Lent...
I bought these stations of the cross prints
from CHC. I originally intended to use them when we prayed the Stations but instead, each day during Lent (or at least a couple times a week) we start our morning by talking about a picture, what happened during that particular time, etc. Then, I hang the picture in one of the panes of our dining room window. After a few weeks they are all hanging as a wonderful reminder of the Stations.

Becky,
I love those prints. They're affordable, too! I was at a local Catholic store and their prints were pricey.

Thank you!

I'm embarresed to say this, but Lent has always been about giving things up and fasting. Which is wonderful, but since we started actually LIVING the Liturgical Year, doing some of these "extras" as a family has made us closer to eachother and God. We enjoy our Catholic faith so much more now.

Oh, Becky, I love this idea too!
We have panes in our patio door in the dining area, and during Advent we colored those "stained glass" pictures of the Nativity story. The kids enjoyed seeing their artwork every day, and it was a great visual point of reference.

I think we will incorporate this into our Lent/Easter preparations as well.

I am always inspired when I hang out here for a few hours! Thanks, ladies.
