Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm very slowly delving into Montessori math, and I'm preparing to teach ds the snake game. Adding colored beads together to make ten and replacing them with a ten bar- got it.

Black and white beads- don't get it. I understand how you make a snake, count beads to ten and then replace the beads with the golden bar and use black beads to hold your place. I don't understand why there are only black beads up to five and then the rest are white. Is this because you really only ever need up to five black beads? Are the white beads just there to make a nice pyramid? Or am I missing something? When, for example, would you use the five black/four white bead bar in preference over the plain five bar?

One more: how long do you make the snake? Just a random length?

I'm feeling a little silly about not getting this on my own. *sigh*

OK- I watched all the videos- very good. But I'm still not understanding why the mix of black and white beads (or grey and white or red and white) is used. Why aren't all the remainder beads just one color??

I think it is just a visual device so you can easily see how many there are without counting.

I thought that might be it... and I don't know why it just bothers me. I guess I'll get used to it. Thanks again for your help!
