Does anyone have any advice for this? She is 12 1/2 and doesn't swallow them...at all. We have done M&Ms as practice...all that happened was I ended up with a belly full of whole candy trying to show her and she had nothing!

Today she needed Tylenol and I just dosed her an 11yrold dose of the children's liquid, the highest they have. I told her I didn't know how well it would help, but she wouldn't even try the caplets I had.

This may seem funny....but I have always had a hard time swallowing pills. I put the pill in yogurt or applesauce on a spoon. Then I swallow the whole spoonful at one time. This works great for me. I seem to have a very strong gag reflex. I have been doing this since I was a kid.

We use tic-tacs for practice, just one a day at breakfast. They try and try until it's down. There are chewable motrin and tylenol for kids, but they're expensive.

If it's not coated, you could crush it and try the applesauce or yogurt. My mom always used grape jelly

Part of it is going to be the process of opening the throat to swallow them.. You can practice without using anything for the pill at all.. give her a bit of water and have her swallow it all in one gulp.. and build up the amount of water for her to swallow in one gulp.

My doc says to start with mini M&Ms first before moving up to regular sized. He also recommends putting it in the middle of the tongue and not the back of the tongue especially if the child has a strong gag reflex.

Hi, Jennifer!! I also have an over active gag reflex...worse when pregnant, of course. So, I am a BAD OB nurse, who rarely can take the prenatal vitamins, as they are. Many of my patients say the same thing.

Kacky...NO MATTER HOW MUCH WE TRY, we cannot get my almost 15yo to swallow pills...and she is the ONLY one who needs to as she has to take prophylactic antibiotics for dental care......she prefers to chew 8-12 tablets than SWALLOW one. All of the younger kids can swallow pills and show off to her, when they take vitamin C.

I will have to try some of these tactics. Good question, Kacky!

Also, thinking about it.. I'm encouraged to get a pill down faster if it tastes bad.. and well I wouldn't see a problem with an m&m melting in my mouth.. matter of fact.. it might be the opposite.. since I'd rather eat the m&m than swallow it whole

Maybe something like vit. C that will be rather bitter and strong tasting would help encourage getting it swallowed more than an m&m would.

Thanks for these suggestions!

The water sounds great and having a small tictac or miniM&M, even everyday at breakfast, that sounds good. I bet I can get some other children to do it. I know that we have had the experience with an antibiotic one time that we had to have in liquid form for said dd and it cost almost 2X as much as the pill form she could have had.

A bad thing about this is that I am so unsympathetic. Even the times I was pregnant, I could take two of the (my dh called them horse pills) prenatal tablets, at the same time with absolutely no problem. I've done 3 Advils at a time too when I hurt my back. So I think that is making it harder for me to teach her because I become so frustrated! But I think it obviously makes more sense to work on this before the time is here that we need an antibiotic or something!

Oh I did try a google search too on this topic, I found something that might be good too. My dd always complains her problem is she just feels like she has to chew at least once before she swallows. The suggestion I saw said to put a bit of bread on the side of your mouth, the pill on the tongue, then take a quick bit of the bread and then swallow it all down. Who knows??? Might work too!

Interesting idea, Kacky.

Jodie, the vitamin C is what what we have her practice on......it just gets smaller and smaller and more bitter

Even though I can relate with my dd, I am also somewhat unsympathetic .....since I have one of those: just suck it up" attitudes about life    and get it over with......we have been working on our little problem for at least five years

Actually I think my oldest learned on dramamine.. she really wanted to get that one down (mid-trip stopped at small store all they had was the swallow type and she was miserable without it) which got her over that first hump.. after that she practised with vit. C.. she can swallow the smaller pills now.

When I was two years old, I developed seizures that required me to take medication in pill form three times a day. The doctor taught me to put the pill between my lips and knock it in with the rim of the glass. I have taught my children the same when they take their vitamins and it seems to work for them as well.

Best of luck!

Well that sounds interesting too...here's my dumb question though...I'm assuming your glass has water in it so you are knocking it and washing it sort of all it once??
