This seems to be a popular trend. You make 6-12 family dinners and then take them home for your freezer. I think it costs about 200.00 for 12 meals. That is easily what I would spend going out to dinner once a week over a month.
Has anyone tried this? I think I am going to sign up for a class later this week. I'll let you know how it goes.

Mary Chris, it's funny you brought this up because my field trip group is planning a Mom's Night Out there in October! I'm not going because we've tightened our budget and the $155 for 8 meals doesn't work for us right now. BUT, it's a great group of moms (technically not a "Catholic" group, but almost all the moms are Catholic) and if you want to go with them I'm sure they'd love to have you! Let me know if you want me to hook you up.

I just went last night. What a great time! I made 12, 6 serving meals for $195. For my husband and I that translates into about 6 weeks worth of meals! I was totally exhausted at the end of the evening, but who wouldn't be after making so many meals. And the way I look at it, one evening of being tired for the convenience over the next 6 weeks is well worth it. It took about 2 hours to make all of the meals. There were 8 stations, each one having a few different meals at each station. I likened it to a salad bar. The instructions were written out above the station, and were so easy to follow. Everything was already cut, chopped, prepped; they even put the appropriate measuring utensils with each ingredient to save time. I made Chicken Parmesan, Taco Guaco Burgers (they even include the buns!), Prosciutto Wrapped Chicken, Roasted Vegetable Agnolotti, Thai Style Coconut Chicken with Rice, Chinese 5 Spice Pork Chops, Make your own Calzones, Pork Carnitas with Pintos (includes the cheese, cilantro and tortillas), Provencal Chicken with Brocolli and Rice, Marinated Flank Steak, Mediterranean Shrimp with Orzo, and Salmon Pesto Pasta Toss. Because I was with a group of 12 women, we got the Molten Chocolate Cakes for free!

The place was so clean. There was plenty of staff around cleaning up after us. They ask you to wash your hands between statios so there is no cross-contamination. The also provided all of the containers to take the food home in. My husband is not sure how they make any money! Now I haven't actually tasted the food yet, but if it tastes anywhere near as good as it looked while making it, I'm going to be very happy with the results. My husband and I were talking about doing it again next month as well. I'll post again with a review of the taste of the food. I totally recommend it so far though!

I think this idea is great...and I also think that once you see how it's done, you can adapt it for home use. Last year, my husband decided we'd invite our whole command (180 sailors plus about 80 civilians, and spouses) for Christmas parties. I rapidly became an expert in freeze-ahead party food! My mom brought all her appetizer and dessert recipes, and we picked several that could be made ahead and frozen. I also have a cookbook called "Make-A-Mix" and made lots of freeze-and-slice cookie dough; on the day of each party I unwrapped several logs of dough, sliced, and baked. The only thing we purchased ready made for the parties was a six foot sub sandwich. All the other food was appetizers and desserts, and I cooked or dished up those things (e. g. pita triangles and hummus from Costco...I didn't "cook" that).

Another version of this idea (that I've heard of, but not tried) is one in which each person makes several families' worth of one freeze-ahead dish or item, and then everyone swaps.

Perhaps we need a thread on easy-to-make freezer foods?

Now I am hungry!

Have you seen this menus4moms.? I signed up a couple of weeks ago. You get a message in your inbox and from there you go to a printable version of the menu complete with grocery list. The recipes are simple and good. Some times I have to move them around for example she had ground beef twice in a row last week so I switched them around. She also gives you tips to prepare double and freeze for another meal. So far I have enjoyed the convinience.
Thought I'll share this in case you haven't heard about it,

So we had our first meal last night - Mediterranean Shrimp with Orzo. I have to say DELICIOUS!!! The spices and combination was just yummy. Looking forward to trying the Calzones tonight

I love Make-A-Mix!! It is one cookbook that stays on my counter so I can get to it easily. When I first bought it I faithfully cooked up the meat mixtures and stored them in the freezer. It was so easy to pull them out and fix one of the recipes. I need to get back to that! It seems so much easier than preparing the entire meal for the freezer.
