Hi,

My baby will be baptized on Sunday--we're excited! However, we got the family "white" garment back, and there are chrism stains on it. (To be honest, they could be from my last baby, in which case they are a few years old!)

The gown is cotton. Will bleach do any good or will it just wear the fabric? It is not antique, but it is not mine and I want to be careful.

I just keep thinking about the symbolism of the garment--it really should be "without stain," right?

I would use something that is a degreaser rather than bleach.. bleach can actually yellow white fabrics.. my favorite stain remover is Zout.. but I've used 409 or simliar degreasing all purpose cleaners very successfully.. also Dawn dish soap might be the trick.. I'd scrub by hand with that and then rinse before washing in the washer.. just to be sure suds weren't a problem.

I would suggest orginal Dawn also. My dd was a flower girl and spilt Italian dressing down the front of her gown. Dawn broke up the grease really well. I then rinse it really well in fairly warm water.

Soaking our antique baptism gown in Bi-O-kleen worked really well for getting out the stains.

Walmart has a spray cleaner called De-Solve-It.
It will clean any grease stain. I keep sodium perborate on hand for soaking antique whites. You can usually get your pharmacist to order some for you. Borax also works well mixed with Dreft. Add a small amount of water to make a thick paste and apply to the area and let it stand for a bit. Then rinse it out.
(The De-Solve-It removed a large amount of candle wax that had dripped on dh's dress slacks. I sprayed it on and let it sit and then wiped it off with a towel. There is not a hint of wax on those slacks.)

My mother-in-law used Oxiclean on my husbands baptismal gown after 25 years of sitting. She was amazed at how it made it look brand new!
