Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

The boys and I are studying the Ancient Greeks this winter, using Story of the World Volume I and the Usborne encyclopedias as a guide. We have yet to study this era so I am very excited!

I am compiling notes for our study, and am looking for ideas ... resources, activities etc. Movies, books, projects, anything!

Here are my notes so far:

*The Percy Jackson and the Olympiads series (we just read the first one for book group)

*Tales from the Odyssey series by Mary Pope Osborne (the 12 yo has read these; the 8yo will read them himself)

*I'm looking for a good older child's version of The Odyssey for the 12yo ... (audio maybe for both?)

*D'Aulaire's Book of Greek Myths naturally

*Is that old movie, The Clash of the Titans child-friendly - I can't remember?

*A look at current day Greece (geography, culture)

*Greek food (pizza? yoghurt?)

*It's a perfect year for these two aspects of Greek culture: the concept of democracy and the Olympics!

*Greek architecture

And that's all I've got so far. Between the holidays and this tooth muddle I've barely done any planning, which brings me here, to all you wise and wonderful ladies - to ask for help!

If you have some ideas to share, I'd be so grateful!
Thanks in advance!

We just finished Greece. My dd (9) loved the book Your Travel Guide to Ancient Greece. It talks about daily life, landmarks, people, transport, food, medicine, etc. in a "you are there" and humorous way. We're now reading the next book in the series, on ancient Rome.

We had a mini greek study when the summer olympics were in Greece. One of our local grocery stores sold dolmas (stuffed grape leaves). I know Costco has some pretty yummy dolmas right now. Ds (7) is fascinated by Greek myths and received this book for Christmas: Mythology
Enjoy!

Thanks, Nancy and Theresa! I've got that book on request, Nancy, and I bookmarked that fun site, Theresa. Their names in Greek will make fun cover pages for their notebooks!

Speaking of Greek, and as if on cue, the mailman just rang my doorbell and delivered a package containing Hey Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek! A Biblical Greek Worktext! I apparently won it via the HSBA! It looks neat, has anyone seen it before?

I hadn't thought about the Greek language. And here I'd been putting off Latin ...

Dawn, I haven't seen Hey Andrew!..., but I've read about it at Lissa's blog. If I recall correctly, one of her girls has really enjoyed it.

When enjoyed Rosemary Sutcliff's Black Ships Before Troy and The Wanderings of Odysseus when my oldest was 10.

Other books that we used for our Greece study:
A Wonder Book for Girls and Boys and Tanglewood Tales by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Wonderful language.
The Librarian Who Measured the Earth
Archimedes and the Door of Science

Crafts: One ds made a small plaster plaque and then painted a Greek dolphin frescoes on it. He also made a popsicle stick Trojan Horse. The other son made a “labyrinth” puzzle in a small box (using strips of cereal box cardboard). (These ideas came from a Chick-fil-A Greek Crafts from the Past booklet .)

Greek food: Baklava! (I LOVE Baklava...) I love Greek salad (with feta cheese and Kalamata olives) too.

You know, you could read Archimedes and the Door of Science and then make catapults or other siege engines...

Just a science tie-in!

Clash of the Titans has a few scenes that are... hmm.. risque. Most of it is good. I think I'd rate it PG and tell you to watch it so you know which scenes to skip

Also www.memoriapress.com has the Famous Men of Greece for your 12 y.o. and also their book that goes with D'Aulaires. I'd just get the teacher guide if you were to get it... it has some of the maps, a few questions and vocab, plus some activities.

Ditto the Sutcliff books and the Famous Men of Greece. We also read the Aeniad by Church for a leap into Rome.

Oh, and both the Church retellings of the Odyssey and the Illiad are on the Baldwin project, as is the Famous Men of Greece.

(No time to link, lunch is finally on the table)

I can offer a little about modern Greece. Maybe some gyros for dinner? We eat lamb gyros with feta cheese for special occasions. I visited Greece many moons ago and have some non-digital pictures I could share with you, but Georges Meis is one of my favorite Greek photographers. I don't know if you can find any books of his photographs, but I found his 2008 calendar pretty easily (and on sale!).

Oh...and maybe a little rabbit trail about the history of the theater and the poet, Thespis (considered to be the first actor). Also, the Greeks used masks since woman weren't allowed to perform on stage. You might have some fun making your own masks and acting out one of the stories. You can find out a little more information
here and a bit more here.

Your library should have The Story of the Aenied by Penelope Lively.
