Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My mother has asked me to help buy a wok... like I know anything about woks?

The ones on Amazon get such mixed reviews.

Can anyone help me out?

thanks!

I think I've read in my cook books (they're older ones so..) but the "spun steel" I think they're called are supposed to be really good.. they have a circle type pattern in them.. but they're a stainless steel.. and you treat them rather like cast iron.. you want to season them with oil and high heat.. and you dry them with heat.. I have one that was my mom's that may be as old as I am and it's wonderful. But it's a true wok.. rounded bottom... not a flat bottom or the skillet/wok things I've seen.

What is she going to use it for? If for stir-fries and tossing and general wok use, get the carbon steel or cast iron. If she wants to steam stuff, stainless is best.

I use mine for stir-fries and deep-fries. Here's mine -- I've had it for more than 10 years -- but I also like their hand-hammered pow.

I don't like nonstick or stainless for anything but steaming, based on experience. And I don't like metal handles because it's unweildy when tossing.

Also, is she a big or small person? I love the big woks but because I'm small I can't really work with anything larger than a 14".

This is for a gift for my sister's birthday, and I believe she wants to stir fry with it. She is about 5'2. Thanks!
