Anyone read or have any experience with The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick. My 11yo dd received this as a Christmas gift. There are a number of very intriguing illustrations, and she is anxious to read it, but I don't know anything about the book. Surely one of you has read it and has an opinion.

Let me know what you thought. Is there any sort of boy/girl relationship thing developed in the book?

I read this book at the end of the summer. I thought it was the coolest book ever. The illustrations are awesome and when you read the book, they make so much sense. It's about, essentially, a silent film star. So those are some of the pictures you see in the book. The story itself wants you to think of viewing it in your head like a movie, so that is why you get those fade out and fade in type pictures. It isn't a long read, even though if you just hand it to someone, they'll think you're crazy! I read it from beginning to end from early evening to about midnight (with some chores in between).

Anyways, I recommend it. Also my friend who has a Masters in English (with an emphasis on Children's Lit) read it after me and has put it in her Middle School Girls Book Club (of which my dd is apart of). She loved it too. We both purchased it, even though in hardcover it is rather pricey...but worth it!

Oh and for the boy/girl relationship...totally normal friendship. The girl helps the boy who is homeless (sort of, you'll see) and becomes his only friend. It could have easily just as been about 2 boys or 2 girls...but I assume the author used one of each to attract both genders to read the book. KWIM
