Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've heard some good reviews of these books from homeschooled kids. Last summer, I heard an interview with the author on the radio and he was incredibly obnoxious and very liberal. So, I just dismissed the books and the movie altogether. After reading the kids' reviews, I'm wondering if we're missing something good and I made an erroneous judgment...anybody have an opinion?

I wonder as well. When I saw the positive posts I considered getting them for my Godson's birthday. I went to Amazon and read the reviews over there as well.
At our house we have read the LOTR, but we have not done Harry Potter. I am not sure where this series would fall in the scheme of things. I would be interested in what others have to say. For now I decided to get my Godson some Matt Christopher books as I know these are safe!

I read the first one. Maybe I'm missing something, but I thought it read as if a fifth grader wrote it. And the story line was just depressing. I couldn't find any redeeming value to it.

My boys and I like the Lemony Snickett books.

They are clever. They are funny. We find the little dictionary definitons of words to be amusing. The characters are deliciously described, definitely good or bad. No grey.

The story lines may seem to be depressing at first, but there are a) always caring adults and b) the children stand by each other and are very resourceful and c) it is satirical, in a sense - a satire on those gothic novels.

Okay, not great literature but interesting and discussion provoking.

At least, that's one opinion.

They are very popular here!
Great literature? No, but definately amusing and fun.
Nothing we've had any problems with. . . except who gets to read which one next.

God bless!

My dd picked them up over the summer, whizzed through the first two ... couldn't wait to read the rest of the series ... then stuck halfway through the third and decided she'd had enough! I skimmed through and saw them as a harmless take on the Gothic novel.

My 9 year old son read the first 4 books then gave up on the series. The bad guy always gets away, and he was impatient for the good guys to win. After he found out how many books were in the series he said, "forget it."

I have to agree with Bridget. My son started reading them back in public school, when all his friends were also. So I read the first two (Elizabeth, they're extremely easy to read - I whizzed through the first one in about an hour or less).
Basically, I'd have to say they are "twaddle" in CM's terms. Nothing challenging in the literary sense, no development of the characters, etc.
Ds read about 3 and decided that was enough. Last year he read the Redwall books and thought they were WAY better.
