Hi,
I would love to hear some opinions on these two questions.
What do you think about putting up pictures/videos of your kids/family on your blog? Are you comfortable with sharing them? Do you worry? Is there a way to ensure that someone can't take them? I love sharing the little glimpses into our day, especially when dh isn't home, but then I hear scary things. I know many of you DO put up pics. What made you decide to do so (I want you to convince me it is okay!)
And...what about comments? On or off? I have turned mine back on....but sometimes I end up checking my blog to see if I have any comments, and then I end up online more than I should....but I really, really enjoy the interaction with comments (well, usually....).
So, what do you think?

Excellent questions, Laura.
As far as pics and video, as you know, I do that. My feeling is that I am not personally doing anything wrong in putting the pictures up. I am not putting anything up that might be leading anyone to sin, nothing suggestive or scandalous in any way. However, I cannot control what others may do with the images I put up. Although it appalls me to think some sicko might be using my kids pictures in inappropriate ways, in truth, my children themselves are not actually harmed by it if they do.
I try not to put up identifying information, but in this day and age, if someone wants to find info, they can. In the meantime I refuse to live my life in fear.I want to share my life with others, and a huge part of my life is, of course, my children.
So...enough about that from me!
Comments. They are a blessing and a curse! I absolutely LOVE comments! I love the feedback, and I also love leaving comments on other blogs. However,I see why some folks have turned theirs off because they can become addicting. But honestly, if I wasn't on the computer checking comments, I could easily find another way to wile away the time (like on this board, for example or games like spider solitaire)when I should be getting things accomplished here at home. The comments are not the problem, my self control (or lack thereof) is the problem!
So, I think if comments are a temptation you absolutely cannot control, or do not want to have to control, then off they go. If you can control it, enjoy!

Laura,
Dh and I talked a lot about this when I first started blogging because my first blog was entirely for the purpose of posting pictures and stories about my kids for our family and friends who are far away. We came to the same conclusion as Theresa. I use real names but try not to give too many other details--I'm always conflicted about names, but, as Theresa said, if someone really wanted to figure out who I was they probably could.
I mostly just get comments from my best friend who lives several hours away and the main reason I have my other blog is to "communicate" with her, so I check away!
God Bless,
Susan

I have decided to keep my dc's faces off my blog. Someone did a search for cub scout diapers and came up with a picture of my son in his cub scout uniform. At some point, in a different post, I mentioned diapers and that's what led them to me. Not long after that, someone did a search for pretty girls and came up with a close up of my dd dressed up for Christmas. That was the last straw. I pulled all pictures of my dc's faces. Back or profile is fine, but no more faces. Since then, I haven't had any weird searches.
I use fake names for my dc.
There is no way to prevent someone from taking any picture you post on your blog and manipulating it with photo editing software. Sick people can and do do this kind of thing. Some people are just happy to use your dc's pictures as is for their own pleasure. Sorry.
On a lighter note, have you ever seen this site:

As for the comments - can you set them to be emailed to you? I do this and comments arrive in my inbox with the rest of my mail. I can read them at my leisure.

I use real names and places. I think I would get confused if I renamed my kids (have a hard enough time remembering their names normally). I am not always direct about where we are or what we are doing, and I never post a date and suggest we meet there...I post after the fact. But if anyone really wanted to find us, they could. No one seems that interested .

I use pictures, but pseudonyms, and I don't provide details about where we are, beyond vague geography. What Theresa said is pretty much my philosophy.
And I like comments. If I have an addiction problem, it's with visiting and commenting on other people's blogs, not checking my own for comments. (Sitemeter, on the other hand, is dangerous!)

I post pictures and real names because my blog is mostly about my family for friends and family to read. My blog is not listed as a public blog on Blogger so I don't think anything on my blog - including pictures - can turn up as a search result on Google, etc. I'm not 100% sure about this, but I've tried searching for specific things from my blog on Google and can't find them...the only way I think a "scary" person could find my blog is through a comment I leave on someone's site that links to my blogger profile and then clicks on my website from there...someone please correct me if I'm wrong about this.
I leave comments on...don't expect any...and am happy when I get them.

Sitemeter is a widget gizmo you can put on your blog to track your traffic. I didn't mean it was literally dangerous, as in a danger to you or your family -- it's just dangerous for me because I can spend a lot of time going, hmmmmm, readers in Guam, readers in Norway . . . In other words, I find it too fun!
