I could use some advice from those who have girls. When do you know that it is time to get a bra? I always thought I would know, but really it is tough. Also what kind is best for a girl who I think won't like the feel of this. Any advice and comments are helpful!

With my dds we got bras when they had begun to develop to the point that a knit shirt seemed to give "too much information". At first, it was not for support, but for privacy/modesty. We found some at Old Navy that were in small sizes and were more like shortened undershirts, if you know what I mean. They had some with adjustable straps as well as ones that were more like sports bras. So, there are style choices for girls who prefer one or another.

My 10 y.o. has been wearing one for well over a year now. She seems a bit developed for her age though. I bought her some when I began to notice, like Nancy, her tops made it known that she was begining to develop. She wears the kind with adjustable straps, I think they are called 'bralettes' or something like that. At first they were for modesty, now they are also for support.

yes.. for more coverage/modesty.. not quite there yet.. but could be soon and with my limited local options.. I just bought several at JC Penny that are the flat front (not cups) like a sports bra.. but the straps are adjustable. I thought those would be the most versatile.
But in the meantime she's been using undershirts which are enough for now (but might not be in a few months)

It was a much easier thing to figure out when I was a kid. Sixth grade was the point in Catholic school where we switched from jumpers to white blouses and skirts. So for the undeveloped, like me, that was the obvious point to start wearing a bra for modesty.
I can't imagine the day when I'll have to buy for mine. Although, this past fall when we went to get their winter wardrobe, my dd (then still 4) said, "Mom, I'm not leaving here until you get me my first bra." I think this was somewhat prompted by the fact that she has started moving up to the girls section for some clothes, and the bras were in that section. Of course, I quickly pointed out that bras are not for four-year-olds and that she didn't have anything to put in a bra. I did get her a few camisoles that seemed to pacify her inner-woman.

Well. We just went through this again. When my daughter was almost 10 we just had her wear undershirts under everything, then we had to switch to double layer "training bras" from Target. A couple of days ago we had to switch again to the one with the tiniest of cups. Much more modest and it doesn't hurt when she runs down the stairs . What gets me though, why are these bras so heavily padded and have UNDERWIRES?

We've done the same thing with the little sports bra type ones. My daughter likes the Maidenform brand the best. I guess the elastic is more comfortable. She's 11 and has been wearing one for about a year, but she started for modesty too. She started out with a camisole or tanktop first until that wasn't enough.
I don't get the underwire/padded thing either....they are girls, not women!
