When do you stay home from mass? I know it sounds silly, but if you know you are getting sick, do you stay home? What if everyone has been sick and the worst is over, but you are all still sniffling and coughing? Or do you go no matter what?
In the winter it seems like we are always getting a cold, have a cold or are getting over one. Not wanting to spread germs around, but also not wanting to stay home without just cause, I often find myself feeling guilty if I do go to mass blowing my nose or equally guilty for staying home. Maybe guilty is not the right word- maybe unsure if I am doing the right thing is a better way to put it.
Does anyone have any hard and fast guidelines?

For us--we are home for fevers 100 and over and until 12-24 hours after a fever breaks. Also home, if my kids sound bad(rattly cough-or upper airway noise, or really noisy nose)look bad or look sick(that "sick" or tired look) or have colored "stuff" coming out of their noses.
Sniffles, clear drainage, dry cough, etc. we usually are out. These are the rules for mass and any outside activity.
If we know we are getting sick-like the flu is going around our family-we will stay home. No sense in exposing everyone at the event or catching something else while defenses are down.

Thank you. We are still in the rattly cough and noisy nose phase. Feeling better, but you wouldn't feel good sitting next to us in church for an hour or more.

If the dc or dh and I have been sick--cough, running nose, lots of sneezing, generally "ucky" within 24 hrs I forget about going to Mass. Well, usually the parent who is NOT sick tries to go--if we have enough warning, we usually tag team--DH goes to the vigil Mass, and I will go to the Sun am, or vice-versa....
But if its one of the dc, we generally don't take any of the others, even if they aren't showing any signs yet, cause they share a room, their toys, and they still don't get the point behind not sharing cups and such...

When we were members of a tiny parish with mostly older members in frail health, we stayed home more than we do now so we wouldn't infect them. If you sneezed there, you could literally hit 1/4 of the congregation, the building was so small.
We tag team as needed, but usually it's dh who's sick. Homeschooling helps keep my dc pretty healthy.

We have a similar parish to Nancy's old one. Plus my child is post liver transplant and has picked up several very bad bugs from people who come to mass with viruses. I think it can be a charitable act to stay home from Mass to protect others from symptoms.
Children shed more viruses than adults, or so the health care professionals have told us; so going to church with a sick child under the teen years is more likely to infect someone than going with older ones.
Jimmy Akin wrote about going to Mass when coughing and sneezing.
Missing Mass to care for young ones is legitimate, he points out as well.
