watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade? I know this is not just pregnancy hormones, because it happened last year, too. There's just something about sitting down and watching it with my older daughter (and now the younger one is starting to notice parts of it) that makes me teary-eyed. I don't remember being particularly attached to the parade as a child, but for some reason I really feel like I'm sharing an experience with my kids when we watch it.
True, I know that it is full of blatant commercialism from the commercials, the floats, and balloons. There's something, though, about the excitement as my kids recognize characters that they already enjoy. It also provided fodder for lots of educational discussion as we talked about New York, the Rockettes, Broadway musicals, marching bands, and how John Adams got wrongly excluded yet again (there were three big head characters representing founding fathers: Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington).
Maybe I'm just weird, but the parade just makes me joyfully weepy.

Barbara, ANY parade makes me weepy. I don't know what it is, but it's always happened since I was a teenager! So, yes, I did get weepy yesterday watching the parade!

I knew that I wasn't alone in being a bit weepy while watching parades (How about the marching band from Virginia Tech with their ranks broken by a space reserved for a member who was lost in the tragedy?)...but I thought for sure I was alone in missing John Adams .
Love,

Barbara,
That's not weird. I have some things like that, too.
One thing that happens periodically to me that makes me teary is when I'm having a happy laughing moment with my kids. They will be laughing, then all of a sudden its like it becomes surreal. . .I realize that this is tiny fleeting moment that will never happen again, and then I picture them grown. . .and I have to fight tears. Its actually really annoying because I don't want to ruin the mood with Mommy crying.
Maybe I'm weird. . .I was bauling just typing this. How silly

I also have weepy moments as well. More than I care to count sometimes. The children (well really teenagers) always look over at me to see if tears are welling up in my eyes.
I think that it has gotten worse with middle age. And anything can set it off ... parades, movies, books that I read aloud to children ... sometimes I am a bit embarassed, but usually I just stop and try to collect myself.

After watching and getting a bit teary eyed,( and yes, I love watching Santa in his sleigh,) we laugh about the dog show, all while doing meal prep.

I hope I'm not shifting the subject too much, but I started actually wanting to watch Rudolf and The Year Without a Santa Claus, Frosty and Santa Claus is Coming to Town with my kids. I enjoyed them as a child and I feel like I'm depriving them of a little bit of historical fun.
We haven't watched a Macy's parade in YEARS! We have just got to hook the TV up!
And Sarah, I feel weepy at the oddest moments, too. Sometimes when one of my kids has done something special for another ... you know, those sort of inwardly proud moments that just spill over?
