Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Just a long shot -- dh has earnt some book vouchers for a report he wrote. Trouble is, he has to use them at Oxford University Press.

I'm keen to get my little mitts on them, of course, but daunted by the size of the back catalogue. Does anyone have any particular favourites published by OUP?

Thanks!

You could look at the "First Oxford Book of ..." series. We have the First Oxford Book of Art and I have used it quite a bit - it has themed double page spreads with a couple of art works to look at, pointers of things to look for, and a related art activity to try.

For older children (worth buying ahead?) I recommend the Young Oxford History of Britain and Ireland. It is IMO the best modern British history text for children. I should say it is written at younger secondary age level. It is in five sections, each written by an expert in their field. It is secular, but the coverage of Church history is pretty good.

OUP also do some good poetry anthologies for children.

I do not have any idea, Elizabeth......but, being the bibliophile that I am.....I would love to see your final choices!

Thanks! I deliberated for ages over this list -- hard to know how best to spend the money without the aid of a crystal ball! Kathryn, your recommendations were really helpful. The History set is on offer with Book People for much less so i couldn't bear to pay full price, even with vouchers.

Chari, you asked, and here it is! Excuse all the ISBNs and prices, but I'm so cross-eyed by now that I couldn't face stripping it all out. Mixture of things for eldest bookworm to read now, reference for now/later, Christmas presents for godchildren, and even one title for me!

WOW, Elizabeth!!! What great choices you made! He must have had a hefty voucher. Is voucher the same as gift certificate?

It will be such a luxury to touch and breathe in those books when they arrive

Thanks for sharing with me........and everyone else.

Oooh! Good list!

We have the Oxford Children's Book of Famous People, and it is a very useful reference. I think the Oxford Junior Atlas is the best of its kind for that age, too. There is a good map skills workbook to go with it available from Amazon here - it covers all the map basics without too much busy work, if I remember rightly. DD1 worked through it three or four years ago.

I bought my Young Oxford History set from the Book People. I love the Book People

Thanks! It's quite difficult buying 'in the dark' from just one publisher -- but I'm not complaining!

DH got £200-worth of books for writing a review of a book proposal for OUP. (He could have taken cash, but it would have been less.) Good for us, and good for them, too, because it doesn't cost them £200, of course! (In a previous life, I used to work for their rival...)

My dh recently did something similar and we have a credit with Elsevier but I don't see anything useful for little ones there.
