Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm wondering if someone can help me decide what to do. I discovered PLL and ILL last year and had decided that I was most definately going to use them. But now, as I use more CHC materials I see that they have a Grammar program for the younger years. I am just wondering which is better. I guess it would be too much to do both? Any suggestions?

Becky, I have used both for my now 4th grade dd and CHC with my 2nd grad ds, I really like them both but have decided to continue only the Speller with my older and am using a combination of ILL, Stories With a View (CHC) and Simply Grammar for this year. I do Stories... about 2-3x's per month, ILL 1x per week and Simply Grammar 1x per week (orally). I let her do the Speller (I think it's level D) on her own and then I will randomly quiz her usually after one or two lessons.

Now for my ds (2nd) he's just finishing up with MVFCS and will move on to Speller Level A and Language of God Level A, then I'll probably start him on ILL (or PLL if he's not ready) and maybe Speller B.

I'm trying to do alot of our Grammar more orally and promote a more writing friendly atmosphere in our school with lots of poetry reading and tales and such to hopefully instill a little more creativity. I have found that the workbooks tend to squelch the creativity to "just get them done" if you kwim. HTH a little, good luck on your planning.

For the first time this year I have started a formal grammar program. But you know I'm wonddering whether it is the correct way to go. I am finding that they are just 'getting it done' they don't like grammar.

Yet orally they really are quite good, for example when we are reading and they feel something is not grammatically correct they won't hesitate to say so. Even the six year old said yesterday that his reader didn't make sense(it didn't) I had to explain that he was correct, his choose of word was better but as it was a reader it was abit stilted.

The last couple of days I've been pondering about maybe just getting dd12 to do grammar next term, but then today she tells me she doesn't understand it (even though she gets it right)

You know I think I've got into the mentality a bit myself, just get it done. Not a good sign.

Emma Serl was good when we did it as it was mostly oral.

Erin, that's why I am using a variety of resources this year and then doing them mostly oral, or with my talking them through a workbook page, so as to avoid the *just getting it over with* and no absorption (SP?) of the materials.

WE are really enjoying the process and I've been real happy with what we're using so far

We've only done 2 weeks so far but I have to say ds (12) and i are both loving The Latin Road to English Grammar. I know this wasn't a topic on Latin, but this teaches the English grammar right along with learning Latin. When I pointed out to ds that he's basically getting two subjects done at once, he agreed it's much less boring than previous grammar (does anyone really like doing grammar?)
Anyway, if you're thinking of doing Latin, LREG will cover both.

Karen,

Can you elaborate a little more on The Latin Road to English Grammar? How does your day go and such? Do you use this in place of any other grammar, vocabulary, spelling etc.? Is it hard to implemant?

Thanks so much,
Lisa
