Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was just reading the doll kit/making thread down below and clicked onto Joy's Waldorf Dolls website. I don't have any experience with Waldorf, however these sweet dolls really captured my attention!!! They seem like something my 2 year old would just latch on to. I have never been a fan of the plastic baby dolls, so we really don't have any around.
Of course, my problem is the price tag!!! I was wondering if anyone has these dolls and could tell me if they are *really* worth all that money or where I could find some that are less expensive, or any other tips? I am a novice at the sewing machine, a total beginner - so I would be hesitant to make my own...but I don't know, how hard is it??

I've heard it is pretty hard. I'm "bumping" you up because someone on their blog is photographing the process of making one of these dolls--? I can't find it now.

There are books, kits, and even a dvd available. Weir dolls actually has a doll body & heads you can buy pre-sewn. But the natural materials really start to add up.

Magic Cabin has a nice looking doll for $89 which I hope someday to ask Grandma to buy for my daughter (right now she loves her baby doll so we'll stick with that!). I tried to post a link but it didn't work, sorry!! They also have an organic cotton doll with a cap (if you don't mind a cap, instead of hair) and a very nice looking extra outfit on their sale page for $39 . I seriously thought about getting this but decided to hold out for a doll with hair instead.

Katherine from the Onion Dome was blogging this (she'd done the head and face), but now that she's taken her blog down, those links have disappeared.

Another time I was searching, I had found a pictorial demonstration of making the head and face somewhere else—but I didn't make a note of it at the time, so it's also lost in the ether:-(

The kindergarden teacher at my son's former school offers workshops on making the heavy baby dolls. Perhaps if you have a local Waldorf/Steiner school, you could ring them up and see if they offer something similar. I am sure it helps to have an experienced hand guide you through your first doll.
