do you have separate recipes for sandwich bread vs dinner or breakfast bread? What's your favorite sandwich bread recipe? I've been making a wheat bread which is fabulous for dinner (and great as toast) but the kiddoes don't much care for it for sandwiches as it's too dense ...

Any suggestions?

slicing thinner can counter a denser bread.. the recipe I use we mostly use as sandwich bread.. we don't serve bread so much with dinner.. too many children who'd eat nothing but bread and butter given half a chance

Hi Mary,

Here is the recipe we use for white/sandwich bread. It is not very dense and slices nicely when cool.

Rebecca -- that sounds delicious! I'll try that one tomorrow. Jodie, the problem with trying to slice thinner is that the bread I've been making doesn't like being sliced thinner, it just crumbles ....

Oh Rebecca that does sound delicious!

I've always wanted to know, what are rolled oats? Can I use any kind of oats?

Natalia,

According to Joy of Cooking (a classic!):

"rolled oats are separate flakes formed by rolling the groats with hulls removed, and steaming them. The thinness of the flake determines regular or quick-cooking oats."

Basically, you probably only buy rolled oats if you're like me!

I think I posted our bread recipe in another thread that you started Mary. That works well for sandwich bread.

We have just switched to a cracked wheat recipe though and the kids like it better. I got the recipe from this book. It makes a denser loaf and so we have been slicing it thinner.

We have made our own hamburger buns as well, now we just need to tackle hotdog buns.

That is what I thought. Thanks! I was too lazy to do my own research
