This has been mentioned in the learning to read thread.
I have had a lokk on line at this, i think i would like to purchase it, but there are so many books! Did everyone start with the primers? are they 'necessary' or can one just go ahead with book 1?

It depends what stage your child is at. The primers teach the individual letters and letter sounds. Book 1 starts spelling out simple words - the bat, cat, fog, dog stage. If your child already knows the letters and can pick out words beginning or ending with that letter sound, then go for Book 1. If not, you would need the primers.
My daughters both learned to read using Explode the Code alongside the Ladybird Key Words books (one liked Peter and Jane, and the preferred the newer series) and it worked well. I expect to do the same with my littlest. The Ladybird books build knowledge of sight words and give them confidence, and the Explode the Code fills in the phonics.
If you need a UK source, Ichthus Resources sell Explode the Code.

Katherine, thank you. That answers my question beautifully.

One more thing...the 1/2 books are just extra practice (1 1/2 is extra of what is in 1, etc). I've never needed these books.

Ooh, thanks for the heads up on that, Books! After reading this thread, I decided to check the series out. I think it might actually be the type of practice my 6yo needs. We'll be working on the sheets I downloaded from their Book 1 sample today.
Now, to just put some money back on my debit card so I can order some books.

This series has worked so well for the last three that have learned to read, with very little help from me! We do all three primer books to start with, and most of the "half" books. Of course, my kids LOVE doing them, so they don't mind the extra practice. My ds, 9, had a hard time with Alphaphonics, but Explode the Code was just right for him.
My almost 6 yr old dd is finishing up 4.5 now! I can't slow her down.

Well, I ordered and received the first book, and DS6 is actually enjoying the work! Hallelujah! Honestly, I feel like I have tried everything with this kid: 100 EZ Lessons, Little Folks, BOB Books, Little Angel Readers, Montessori Pink Cards (which he does like). Something about the repetition, and reinforcing that with writing, that is clicking with ds. He actually has been asking to do the work, where before it was like pulling teeth to get him to complete anything reading-related.
Thanks again,
Valerie

Valerie,
Which book are you using? Is it the get ready for the code (a,b, and c) or Explode the Code book 1? Did you buy any other materials? Readers or such from the explode the code company?
We are ditching 100EZ lessons for my just-turned 6yods. He is getting frustrated, looking at the words and putting in other sounds, because the previous word had that sound. (Like sounding out "eat", then trying to say "meet" instead of "me.") It is just jumps around too much for him, and he is starting to hate it. How does the Ex. the Code do, as far as introducing sounds?
I have looked at it before and am leaning more heavily to getting it.
Glad to hear your ds is enjoying his reading!
God Bless,
Stacy in MI

I too am interested in this thread. I just ordered book 1 for my ds. Did anyone out there use the flashcards or the teacher's guide? Are they necessary?

I just went ahead and got book 1, nothing else. I think the "get ready" books are for children who don't know their letters or their sounds yet. I'm not sure a teacher's guide would be necessary for someone who is educating at home.
If you look at the
Book 1 Table of Contents, you'll see it starts with a consonant pretest. So, the book assumes the child is familiar with the letter sounds already. Then it moves on to the short vowel sounds. Download Lesson 3 and give it a try before you buy. That way you get a taste of the lesson format.
It's repetitive, but that seems to be the kind of repetition my ds needs. That is, by saying the sounds, matching w/pictures, and then copying the word in writing, my son is getting the reinforcement he needs to learn these words. It's definitely different than the oral repetition in 100 EZ Lessons, which has annoyed this boy and his older brother.

OK, my son loves his book 1. There is a pretest in the front of the book like you mentioned Valerie and I used it to make sure he had his sounds down. He did, so we jumped right in. I don't think I'm going to use the flashcards and the text is so easy I don't think I need the teachers manual.
I hope it works out for everyone else.
I do want to add that it is very "workbookish." While this is great for my workbook-loving son, it would not have worked for my older dd. For her I kindof made up my own program with flashcards, games, and Bob books. She needed to dance, sing, and draw her letters and letter sounds.
