Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Im not sure if this belongs in the craft thread or here, but...
I very much would like to do a Jesse Tree this year. Some of my fondest memories of my catholic school days were of the mass where we would carry up the ornaments we had created and place them on the tree. My mother was really inventive and quite talented at making crafts...so we had the most lovely felt ornaments to contribute. My favorite was the Coat of Many Colors. I remember being in second grade and being able to make that one for the tree that year. Oh, how I loved the accompanying story and the look of all those bright colors on the tree.
So, Im curious as to what people do in terms of accompanying "lessons" when they are creating a Jesse Tree for home. I have gone online and printed off appropriate verses to accompany the different ornaments, but Im hoping to do something more "fun" than just reading and copying the verses. Maybe some of you have ideas for books related to each person represented...
I cant remember if there were special songs we sang at the mass, either. Does anyone know of any?
Any ideas/experiences/links/pictures would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Here is our Jesse Tree

My kids drew the pictures on the wooden ornaments, which I bought at a craft store for $0.50 each. I drilled them and put ribbon on them to hang. They came out great.

We are going to make our first Jesse Tree this advent as well. We have a big picture window in our dining room/school room that we decorate according to the season or month (right now it is covered in origami bats) and my plan is to cut out a big tree from craft paper and tape it on the window and then add our decorations to the branches. That way, we get to enjoy it and our neighbors won't have to bother with making their own :=)! This also helps to keep little hands from destroying it! I know it is a little unusual, but I think it will work for us!

Blessings,
Betsie

It sounds wonderful! Like a stained-glass window. Maybe you could share a picture of it when it's been decorated?wonderful

Faith and family had a great article about the Jesse tree... they made a little group of people and each person made 23 of one ornament and then they swapped

I use the verses and suggested image from Teaching MOMs Advent Calender. Each year we make new ornaments, usually out of cardstock and fairly simple so they can be basically completed while I read the appropriate verses and we discuss them.

I know Leigh Ann's working on the site right now and getting it up to speed for this year so keep checking in if all the links don't work right now.

That is always such an impressive site. I have to tell myself I don't have to do it ALL when I go there!

Has anyone done the Chrismons vs. Jesse Tree or a combo? I've been trying to understand the Chrismons tradition -- I hesitate because I'm such a traditionalist and love the Catholic tradition of the Jesse Tree. But those symbols are so beautiful, and really good teaching tool of incoporating symbols of Christ.

Hey Jenn!
Marianna and I made a few Chrismons and hung them up in the cockpit last year, but they take so very long to cut out. I also thought that since they're so very universal, I'd like to do them for Lent or Easter instead of adding another thing onto Advent. Do you think I ever remember that except during Advent though?

I was looking at Chrismons last year and was thinking the very same thing. They are beautiful! Of course, it's only NOW that I remember again, and it might be a little too much for us this year. Sigh.... I'm putting it on my "next year" list.

Catholic Culture has the Advent Workshop up for this year and the Jesse Tree is featured, of course! Here's the instructions and readings.

I'm partial to this Jesse Tree, because it includes salvation history and types of Christ (or prefigures of Christ) AND it includes the O Antiphons. I know the original Jesse Tree was the lineage of Christ, but I like this approach better (mostly because I was raised on it).

I got this link from another list of another Jesse Tree which has ready made images to do.

Have to correct myself -- these Jesse Tree symbols are what I had growing up, from Elsa Chaney's Twelve Days of Christmas.

Sorry for the serial post. I remembered I found this chapter last year. I can't incorporate it this year, but I thought it had fabulous ideas working in the Liturgy and OT for Advent. It calls the Jesse Tree the Advent Tree or Tree of Hope, and uses the symbols I cited above.

I have a .pdf file here The Advent Tree.
