Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'd really like to get into the Laura Ingalls Wilder books but there are so many! My dd is only nearly 4 but we loved reading Charolette's Web together. Where does one start with the Little House books?

I would start with the first one, Little House in the Big Woods. Laura herself is pretty young in that book. Yes, there are many, but you'll find the right pace.

For those who fall asleep while trying to sit and read (not that I'd know anything about that... ), the audios narrated by Cherry Jones are fantastic!

I vote for the first one, too. It actually FEELS "young" to me, than the others. It is a good start. And, like Barbara syas, Laura is pretty young, so your dd can relate to her easily. I read it to my 5 and 3yo........they did fine with it.......though the 3yo often fell asleep.

We just finished the first book. My older dc had heard it before, but my younger dc(the four and the six year old had not, not the 23 month old--he was napping when we read it). They loved it. It's a great place to start!

I agree - our son had LH in the BW read to him at 3 and he loved it and still recalls parts. He was mystified that people killed and ate bears...

We are listening to the 'Big Woods' on tape in the car and reading Little House in Brookefield(Caroline years) at bedtime. The children all perked up when Aunt Eliza came to visit the house in the big woods for Christmas. They also know her as a 5 year old girl!
My son is getting into these books too!
I just can't read enough of these stories.

Update: My dd (nearly 4) and I finished the Big Woods in about a week! I can't believe how much she loved it. She'd just keep asking if we could keep reading about Laura and Ma and Pa...
I didn't grow up reading these and wish I would have! They are a great read for me too! Makes me realize how 'easy' we have it in these modern times. I am a little confused about all the Little House books. Which order do you they go in?

Thanks again for all the great input!

This is the order of the series:
Little House in the Big Woods
Little House on the Prairie
On the Banks of Plum Creek
Old Town in the Green Groves
By the Shores of Silver Lake
The Long Winter
Little Town on the Prairie
These Happy Golden Years
The First Four Years

Farmer Boy is about her husband, Almanzo, when he was a boy so it isn't part of the chronological story in the rest of the series. So it really can be read at any time. There has been some discussion on the boards somewhere before about the last few in the series. They definitely seem older - not as appealing to the younger children. I'll see if I can find that thread.

I loved them as a kid, too. I so wanted to live the pioneer lifestyle - now as an adult I also realize how hard that life was. Not sure I'm tough enough for it - I like my conveniences.

Thank you so much! Yes I wondered if maybe I would just start over with the first ones if they got a bit too 'old' for her. I also noticed the library had some chapter books that were a condensed version of some of the books put together.
