I have been diagnosed with Anaemia again after years of being ok (those pregnant and nursing years I was fine).

I have been terrible at taking my iron supplement. But last week I was dizzy, more freezing than usual, and down right tired out and realized I needed to start taking care of myself.

My question is, if you supplement Iron, what brand do you use? When I was pregnant I found the prenatal vits made me sick so I didn't take them. When my doctor prescribed the iron supplement, ferrous gluconate (300mgx3 a day) I went for the chelated Health food store ones instead because I was afraid of stomach upset or constipation with the ones she prescribed. But I don't think the ones I got are giving me enough iron.

Any favourite brands ?

Have you tried using alfalfa tablets? It's a food based form of iron so very easy to absorb without the upset some cause. I have a friend who found this was the only thing that would raise her iron levels.

The brand my midwife recommended was Solgar Hematinic Formula. Hmmmm. Never mind. Looking at the bottle I see that each tablet is 15mg, so you would have to take 60 to get 900mg a day.

As a small way to supplement your iron, try to find ways of incorporating blackstrap molasses into your diet. For example, use it instead of syrup on your pancakes and waffles. I like it mixed with oatmeal and my sister in law spreads it on peanut butter toast. I have heard that blackstrap molasses is a pretty absorbable form of iron.

I like Floradix too- it is just the $ up here. It is $40 a bottle!

When you are taking a very absorbable iron you don't need to take so much, so I will look at that brand.

Thank you.

Can you go back to taking the prenatal vitamins? Maybe they won't make you sick now??? I'm not pregnant but have been taking Professional Prenatal Vitamins recommended for those who are anemic (male and female) by Marilyn Shannon in her book Fertility, Cycles and Nutrition. Last year I hemorrhaged with a miscarriage and became really anemic. So even though I had miscarried, I stayed with these vitamins. Seem to do the trick. I also have kind of heavy periods. So it helps there too.

Wow! I can get it for $25-30 here. I didn't think . . . what with you being in Canada and all.

Good luck!

I use the Professional Prenatals too, but I still needed to supplement with the iron tablest during my pregnancy. I wasn't anemic, but my midwife thought my iron levels were low enough for an out of hospital birth that I should supplement anyway. At my postpartum checkup she retested my hemoglobin and said that I had the highest postpartum iron levels she had ever seen. So it probably was a combination of the prenatals and the iron tablets.

BTW, I love, love, love the Professional Prenatal Formula that Kacky linked to. I highly recommend them for pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Hey... that's pretty neat. I linked to the Prof. Prenatals and found out that the iron tabs I have been taking are from the same company. I think I will get the prenatals and another bottle of my iron tablets to take along with them. Thanks so much, I knew this would be a great place to ask.

Yes, with the Can. dollar so high you would think there wouldn't be such a markup. But alas, there is
