Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

OK. I know the book is allegorical? But could someone please enlighten me? I was not real impressed with this one and I am wondering if I get the point will I like it better.

Thanks,

Holly

I remember this bookwell. We had a a deep conversation on it at "Literature Alive!' years ago. I didn't care for it either but my girls loved it.

I'd have to dig around in the archieves to rediscover all the theories about this book.

We have this book. My older kids loved it. I may be dense, I just didn't "see" anything in it.

Okay, I dug around in the Literature Alive! files and found the old discussion thread on this book from January 2004. Whew! Lots of nostalgic memories.

Marcia Mattern shared this recipe:

Strawberry Bread recipe:
2 cups strawberries (we used frozen whole berries)
3 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 Tablespoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 cup oil
4 eggs, beaten
1 cup chopped pecans

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease two 9 x 5 loaf pans. Thaw berries.

Combine flour, sugar, cinnamon, salt and baking soda in large bowl. Mix well.

Add wet ingredients and mix well. Berries will color the dough pink.

Stir in pecans. Divide batter into pans.

Bake for 45 to 50 minutes or until tester inserted comes out clean. Let cool in pans on wire rack for 10 minutes. Turn loaves out and cool completely. Eat while you read the Gray Lady and the Strawberry Snatcher by Molly Bang.

*****

You can access some of the children's narrations
here.

Here is my daughter's version. She was six years old at the time:

"narrated by Chelsea Gibson (age 6)

Once upon a time there was a Grey Lady who bought some strawberries. She told
the man, "Ooh, you have a green thumb. You must be able to make plants."

So the Grey Lady walked off. Then the strawberry snatcher came while she was
walking. She passed by the flower shop.

"Why does the strawberry snatcher have to leave mushrooms everywhere he walks?"
she wondered. It's weird. His feet are blue and big. And he is pretty ugly and
scary.

On the way, children were in a building and they were eating. The children said,
"Ooh, he's ugly." The lady stopped to look at a cake. The Strawberry Snatcher
was really angry about that.

So, on her way back with the strawberries, the Strawberry Snatcher kept
following her. Next he was tried to get the strawberries, but the lady looked at
him. She twisted them onto the other side of her hand. The Strawberry Snatcher
ran and ran and ran all the way to the door. Into the building they went. Into
the hallway they went.

They passed a pretty lady on a skateboard barefoot.

On the way, the Grey Lady got on a school bus but something grabbed the
Strawberry Snatcher. The Strawberry Snatcher made a skateboard out of the things
that grabbed him and followed the lady's tracks. She walked to the other side.
Into the woods she went. But the Strawberry Snatcher followed her into the
woods.

There went the Grey Lady.

The Strawberry Snatcher saw her, but you cannot see her.

So then he went into a tree but she stared at him. Under the top of his fingers
is some red stuff. It looked like he melted or died, but he's not.

On the way there, the lady saw something white as her. So she went inside, but
the Strawberry Snatcher looked for her. Now it's hard to see her. But the
Strawberry Snatcher saw her. She looked like the white stuff that is the tree.
The Strawberry Snatcher can't see her in the tree.

It's weird. The Grey Lady swung like George of the Jungle on his rope swing. The
Strawberry Snatcher kept looking. The Grey Lady jumped off that rope, dragging
it so the Strawberry Snatcher could trip. He was grabbing the rope and his lips
were big. He sort of tripped. By then he couldn't see her. He thought he felt
something hard. There are four of him...one looked backwards, one looked north,
one looked up, one said, "Uh Oh!"

The Grey Lady stared at him. He looked scary as a dinosaur, but then he found
some berries. He almost ate a red one but he knew he couldn't eat it because it
was poisonous. He could only eat the blue or black ones. He ate them and ate
them. He looked funny. And he slipped one into his mouth.

"You better be careful Strawberry Snatcher! There are stickers in that!" *(Note:
Chelsea hollering)*

He went through the stickers eating them and had some thorn hair that looked
funny. The Grey Lady went through the woods to her house. The family was happy
to see her. The big sister ate a strawberry, the baby ate a strawberry, the cat
ate a strawberry, a little boy ate a strawberry, grandpa ate a strawberry, the
mother ate a strawberry, the big sister fed a parrot a strawberry.

That's how they became a strawberry family.

~ The End!

* * * * * * * *

Gee! That is a bizarre little story, isn't it.
It is fun to look back years later and see what your child made of this wordless story though.

Here's the link to the Literature Alive! thread back in Oct. 2003 when I basically asked the same question you've asked, Holly.

Thanks Cay,

I don't check regularly. I should probably preface that when I post topics. I read on the book jacked that it was allegorical and it has been driving me crazy! Thanks for the recipe. Where do you all find the time to bake. I can barely get dinner on the table much less bake.

I'm not able to get into this site. We've loved this book for years (acting it out repeatedly with one ds in particular) and I am surprised to hear that there are deeper meanings here. Anyone have time to share *something*?

Marianne,
You'll need to join the group to get into the site to read the files and messages. It's as easy as 1-2-3.

If your family loves this book, you'll want to read messages. Lots of things to think on there.

I would share the posts and other narrations here but I would have to get everyone's permission and the thread was so long ago.
