Well first I should say sorry to Mary. I was going to get back to you with the gauge on the great wool I found. But....
I started something else. My son's birthday is coming up so I wanted to knit him a sweater. So I took the plunge and decided that I would try something much harder than I usually do and got a pattern for a beautiful Irish Knit, Aran style sweater (with some 50% off merino to boot).
It looked SO complicated at first, but now that I am into it I am having so much fun. I can't multitask with this one mind you... no watching a movie or doing fractions with the kids at the same time. I am glued to the pattern as I knit, but it is turning out so beautifully.
Just had to share my joy ....
(camera is on the outs, or I would post what I've knit up so far)

Kristie -- good for you!
I kind of wish patterns weren't graded (beginner, advanced, whatever) because it's ALL do-able. Never forget that knitting is one stitch -- purl is knitting backwards, yo's are adding stitches on purpose, and cables are twisting knit stitches.
Can't wait to see the final product! Holler if you need clarification or anything ....

Mary, I am new to this topic. Since you are such a pro knitter, I would like some advice. My 12 year old dd wants to learn to knit. There are so many books out there for beginning knitters. What would you recommend. I knitted a few things as a teenager, but that was some 25 years ago!

Maria and Lisa,
Bar none, the best book for helping kntters along is Melanie Falick's Kids Knitting -- it will even show you how to make your own knitting needles! This one really is clear and easy and the projects are fun too!
Holler if you need any more knitterly advice -- I love to talk KNITTING! (I even recently led a retreat near here where I got to talk about knitting from Friday afternoon till Sunday just before lunch -- I was in heaven! )

This sounded so wonderful, did you tape this retreat? Was it Catholic or just knitting? Man, I would so love to go to something like this and spin and knit all weekend uninterrupted Perhaps that is heaven

It was a secular retreat at Abbey of St. Walburga -- about 80% of the 17 ladies are Catholic and I built in times to participate in the Benedictine Sisters' prayer times ... it WAS wonderful and we'll be doing it again (God willing) next Fall!

Thanks, Mary. I've tried knitting before (about 8 years ago )and got so frustrated that I swore I'd never try again! That'll teach me not to swear, huh!

That does sound like heaven...
I just said to my friend tonight, as we were looking through a knitting book, that I need a second 'me' to knit and read all day
