Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi all --

My husband has just been interviewed for a job teaching theology at Belmont Abbey College, outside Charlotte, NC (maybe you've seen their ads: "Got Monks?"). He's been job-hunting for five years and doing part-time adjunct teaching to get by, so this is a real answer to prayer, just getting to the interview stage!

Anyway, all his conversations with people there, from the president down, have been quite encouraging. Of course, it's all in God's hands -- and prayers are appreciated! -- but it's quite possible, God willing, that we might be moving, and I'd love to hear from anyone who might be in that area. I've lived in Charlotte before, but it was before I was married and had kids, and LOOOONG before I ever remotely considered homeschooling -- I was a public school teacher when I lived there! It's a great area, I know, but I'd love to get a sense of what the homeschooling climate is like.

So please, if there's anyone out there who can tell me anything, drop me a PM. I'd love to hear from you.

Thanks!

Sally (currently in TN)

We live in NC but closer to Raleigh. We LOVE Belmont Abbey! Two of my boys are student there and another graduated two and a half years ago and is now at Ave Maria Law School in Michigan.

It's a lovely place. My daughter is only a 9th grader, but she has been quite interested in possibly going there when the time comes. I'd love to have her there, even if the rest of us aren't.

Well, anyway, we shall see. This was really more of an informal and non-official interview -- he had been there over the weekend at a conference and had lots of conversations, and one administrator who hadn't been there when he was rang him up after he got home to sort of suss him out a bit, I think. But that in itself was exciting and a real lift. After five years, we're pretty philosophical when it comes to thinking about possible academic jobs, and we have a good life and good friends where we are . . . we will just trust God that whatever we end up doing is the right thing.

At any rate, I know it's premature, but I am curious to know what homeschooling laws there are like, and what the climate is like for Catholic homeschoolers, given that it's not a really heavily Catholic state. We are blessed with a large and active Catholic homeschool group where we are, and our kids have many friends. Our state requirements are also relatively easy to live with -- we can opt for tracks which enable us to avoid state involvement at all. Just interested in knowing what kind of hoops you might have to jump through in NC.

Thanks, Louise!

Sally
